Most Wanted Large SUV Over $45,000
Winner: Cadillac
Escalade/Escalade
ESV
Not everyone seeks maximum versatility and refinement from a luxury SUV. Instead,
some buyers crave a full-size reward that offers power, comfort, style and excitement
in extra-large doses. For those buyers, the Escalade and its supersize sibling,
the Escalade ESV, are compelling choices. Power comes by way of a vigorous 6.0-liter
V8 that puts out 345 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, and the standard
Road Sensing Suspension that delivers a cushy ride and surprising agility in the
corners. Settle into one of the soft leather seats, and you'll be content for
hours while enjoying the thundering Bose stereo.
Honorable Mention: Hummer
H2
The Hummer H2 cashes in on the popularity and tough image of the H1 while riding
on a traditional full-size truck/SUV platform. This means you can have your Gulf
War hero image without suffering from military spec ride and handling characteristics.
But don't think of the H2 as another SUV wannabe. Equipped with a 6.0-liter V8,
an available self-leveling rear air suspension and monster tires, the H2 is one
of the most capable vehicles you can buy for when the pavement runs out. It seats
six comfortably and comes in Base, Luxury or Adventure trim levels. Go the Adventure
route and you get the aforementioned air suspension, an upgraded audio system,
carpeted floor mats, tool and first-aid kits and a front brush guard. Head the
Luxury route and you'll sit on leather seats while showing off chrome and brushed
aluminum panels plus tubular side step rails. Regardless of how you outfit your
H2 you can count on exploring the great outdoors with little effort.
