Most Wanted Midsize SUV Under $35,000
Winner: Ford
Explorer/Mercury
Mountaineer
Ford pioneered this segment, but the smallish Explorer and rebadged Mountaineer
slipped when copy cats started improving on the Ford formula. A redesign in 2002
turned these two Ford sport-utes from has-beens into must-haves. A fully independent
rear suspension design not only provides a stable, comfortable ride, it frees
up interior space to allow for an optional third-row seat. Explorers feature a
straightforward interior design that offers maximum function with minimal clutter.
The Mountaineer jazzes things up a little with more luxury inside and a more distinct
and upscale exterior. Both offer a powerful V8 engine for stress-free passing
and merging as well as a substantial tow rating (7,000 pounds) and one of the
most comprehensive safety systems available in any vehicle.
Honorable Mention: Honda
Pilot
The Pilot is certainly one of the best crossover SUVs available, and therefore
deserving of honorable mention. Quality and dependability are hallmarks of Honda,
and, with rare exception, the Pilot doesn't disappoint. The Pilot wins high marks
for offering something many crossover SUVs don't have a third-row seat.
Therefore, the Pilot seats eight passengers; one more than the Odyssey minivan.
Both the second and third rows are split 60/40 and can be folded flat to expand
the Pilot's cargo capacity to a whopping 90.3 cubic feet. With its carlike underpinnings,
ample interior room and plenty of cupholders, the Pilot is just the thing for
active families who don't need to venture too far off-road.
