Most Wanted Convertible Under $45,000

BMW 3 Series Winner: BMW 3 Series

Are we biased toward German cars? Yes, but only when they prove to be the most desirable. Case in point, the BMW 3 Series convertible. Drop the soft top, settle into the supportive driver seat and the car's world-class suspension, steering and brakes will provide hours of open-air entertainment on twisty two-lane highways. Beyond simply feeling rock-solid when hustled around turns, this car communicates with the driver in a manner that is alien to most cars. And you don't have to give up a comfortable ride to get this kind of athleticism. Need more performance? Well, there's always the 333-horsepower M3 and its telepathic reflexes.

Honorable Mention: Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class

In spite of its advanced age and high price, we genuinely like the SLK, whose cosmopolitan style and innovative folding hardtop design (allowing function as a coupe or convertible) are unmatched by anything in its price range. Buyers have their pick of the SLK230 and its 192-horse supercharged four; the SLK320 and its smooth 215-hp, 3.2-liter V6; or the high-performance SLK32 AMG with a 349-hp force-fed V6. All SLKs are comfortable and easy to drive in town. Although neither the SLK230 nor the 320 feels super sporting on back roads, enthusiasts will not be disappointed by the SLK32's ability to carve up the pavement.
