Most Wanted Convertible Under $25,000

Mazda MX-5 Miata Winner: Mazda MX-5 Miata

When it first cruised into showrooms in 1990, Mazda's MX-5 Miata was an instant hit, triggering mile-long waiting lists and rabid adoration. Miata-mania has mellowed over the years, but don't take this as an indication that the car's stature as best in class has stumbled. The spunky convertible continues to be the leading option for those seeking drop-top excitement at affordable prices. Available trims include base and LS models, with the latter offering leather upholstery. A surefire stress-reliever, the Miata is proof that big fun doesn't have to come with a big price tag.

Honorable Mention: Ford Mustang

Brimming with raucous all-American bravado, the Ford Mustang is the quintessential pony car. It's no youngster; at almost 40 years of age, the Mustang has been making hearts race for years now, but happily, time has done little to dull its appeal. Available trims include the V6-powered Deluxe and Premium models, and the V8-powered GT Deluxe and GT Premium. The Mustang may not be the most refined convertible on the market, but potent engines and a low price tag have done much to keep this bad boy near the top of its class. Look for a complete redesign of America's favorite pony car for 2005.
