Most Wanted Sedan Under $25,000

Volkswagen Passat Winner: VW Passat

A consistent favorite of ours since the mid-1997 incarnation of the current generation, the midsize Passat manages to please on all levels. It's loaded with standard safety and convenience features (a full array of airbags, ABS, one-touch front windows). The Passat's German heritage is obvious on all fronts — it's both fun to drive and smooth-riding on the highway. Inside, the Passat offers high-quality materials and an upscale feel other sedans in this class are lacking. Whether you're interested in a base GL model with the excellent 1.8-liter turbo (our favorite); a loaded, leather-lined V6; or the powerful, high-end W8, you won't be disappointed. No matter how you look at it, the Passat is simply a great car.

Honorable Mention: Mazda 6

Mazda has admitted the 626 was a poor attempt at trying to beat the Camry and Accord at their own game. Plus, if we're being honest, the 626 had absolutely zero "zoom-zoom." The Mazda 6 (which replaced both the Millenia and 626) is all about the "zoom-zoom." We love the 6's willing and free-revving 220-hp V6 and find the handling to be fun, sporty and confident without sacrificing everyday civility. Many editors praise the 6's good looks and refined powertrain but lament the somewhat cramped rear seat and questionable interior materials quality. Still, we can't resist the sheer fun-to-drive factor or the attractive design elements — the Mazda 6 is a truly sporty car cloaked in a sedan's body.
