Most Wanted Midsize SUV Under $45,000

BMW X5 Winner: BMW X5

Who says SUVs have to come up short when it comes to handling? Certainly not BMW. The X5 impresses with its stable handling and prodigious grip. But this 'ute is more than just a great performer. On the outside, it's sharp and cleanly styled, with crisp, aerodynamic lines that lend it a fashionably stark, utilitarian countenance. And once inside, you'll find yourself ensconced in a world of leather-swathed luxury. Additionally, the X5 boasts some of the top safety scores in its category. The X5 comes in three versions: the 225-horsepower 3.0i, the 290-hp 4.4i and the 340-hp 4.6is.

Honorable Mention: Lincoln Aviator

Lincoln bided its time with regard to its entry into the midsize luxury sport-ute segment, but the thoroughly competent Aviator proves that it was well worth the wait. It's got the upscale looks of its big brother, the Navigator. And its plush interior is replete with gleaming metal accents, rich wood trim and an analog clock that adds a bit of old-world charm to the proceedings. Powered by a 302-horsepower V8, the Aviator is available in Luxury and Premium trims, and may be had in 2WD and AWD iterations. No doubt about it, this Aviator flies high.
