Most Wanted Midsize SUV

Honda Pilot Winner: Honda Pilot

The Pilot is an all-new vehicle for Honda, built to be the "Ultimate Family Adventure Vehicle." It is certainly one of the best crossover SUVs available, and therefore deserving of an Edmunds.com Most Wanted ribbon. Quality and dependability are hallmarks of Honda, and the Pilot doesn't disappoint. It even seats eight passengers, one more than the Odyssey minivan. The second- and third-row seats are positioned theater-style — elevated to give occupants a better outside view. Both the second and third rows are split 60/40 and can be folded flat to expand the Pilot's cargo capacity to a whopping 90.3 cubic feet.

Honorable Mention: Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer

A redesign in 2002 turned these two Ford sport-utes from has-beens into must-haves. A fully independent suspension design not only provides a stable, comfortable ride, it frees up interior space to allow for an optional third-row seat. Explorers feature a straightforward interior design that offers maximum function with minimal clutter, while the Mountaineer jazzes things up a bit with additional upscale trimmings. Both offer a powerful V8 engine for stress-free passing and merging as well as a substantial tow rating (7,000 pounds) and one of the most comprehensive safety systems available in any vehicle.
