Most Wanted Compact SUV

Ford Escape Winner: Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute

Winner in its category for three consecutive years, the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute duo is still an enduring favorite. The right combination of performance and feature content make these compact SUVs a bargain. Two engine options and two- and four-wheel-drive versions are available with the four-wheel-drive V6 model still less expensive than a Jeep Liberty, plus it has more cargo room. If you're looking for a spacious, fun-to-drive compact sport-ute to use both on and off the road, either the Ford Escape or Mazda Tribute will satisfy your SUV craving, and make you feel like you ate a bigger meal you than you paid for.

Honorable Mention: Subaru Forester

The market is full of compact sport-utility vehicles, and the Subaru Forester, one of the earliest players in this competitive group, is still near the top of the mini-ute game. Redesigned for 2003, the Forester is now better-looking inside and out, with a higher grade of interior materials and features. The previous Forester was a good handling vehicle, but an all-new body structure makes this iteration easier to pilot around town, and its seven inches of ground clearance and all-wheel-drive system make it a capable off-roader as well. Even if it's never taken off of the pavement, Forester owners won't be disappointed.
