Most Wanted Convertible Under $25,000

Mazda MX-5 Miata Winner: Mazda MX-5 Miata

Want to feel young and free on a warm summer night? Need to blow off steam after a trying day at the office? Pop the top on Mazda's affordable Miata roadster and fun is at your fingertips. Base and LS models are offered, and the LS includes leather seats, available in black for the first time for 2003. A snazzy Special Edition comes out this spring. Miatas aren't necessarily fast in a straight line; rather, handling is their strong suit. Defining the term "sports car" for more than a decade, a Miata can carve up switchback mountain roads and rush-hour traffic with equal aplomb, plastering a smile on your face a mile wide.

Honorable Mention: Ford Mustang

Sometimes, a car rests on the laurels of its heritage, and does little to maintain enough consumer interest. Those cars inevitably fade out after awhile. Fortunately, the Mustang's not one of them. It's the last of the pony cars because it's the only one that's jogged along with the times. While its basic structure is dated, the Mustang has enough of a variety of prices and brazen temperament to keep buyers, and enthusiasts, coming back for more. This year's fire-breathing 390-hp Cobra should also make a nice addition to any Mustang lover's garage.
