Most Wanted Sedan Under $25,000

Volkswagen Passat Winner: Volkswagen Passat

A consistent favorite of ours since the mid-1997 incarnation of the current generation, the midsize Passat manages to please on all levels. It's loaded with standard safety and convenience features (a full array of airbags, ABS, one-touch front windows). It's both fun to drive and smooth-riding on the highway. And inside each Passat, you'll find premium materials and comfortable accommodations for a family of four or five. Whether you're interested in a base GL model with the excellent turbo four (our favorite), a loaded, leather-lined V6 or the powerful, high-end W8, you won't be disappointed.

Honorable Mention: Honda Accord

Although we're not sold on its exterior styling or attempts to market it as a sport sedan, there's no denying the fact that the redesigned Accord is one solid family car. Certainly, it's larger and more powerful than ever before. Its backseat is as large as the Camry's and engines include a 160-horsepower four-cylinder and a 240-hp V6. While you can get goodies like dual-zone climate control and a voice-operated nav system on EX models, Honda knows who its volume buyers are, and so the well-equipped LX is a decent handler that's also quiet, peppy, refined and quite comfortable. Not terribly exciting, but perfect for the average American family.
