Luxury Sport Coupe
Winner: BMW
330Ci
"A compelling package of speed and style."
Three years into its current model run, the BMW 3 Series shows no signs of letting
up. It doesn't matter what you want. Coupe, convertible, sedan they're
all good. The 330Ci coupe features its own sheetmetal and is slightly longer,
lower and wider. An inline six-cylinder engine makes 225 horsepower and 214 lb-ft
of twist and can be mated to either a five-speed manual or five-speed Steptronic
automatic transmission. Plenty of features are available, including heated seats,
a GPS navigation system and a Premium package that includes Montana leather, a
moonroof and myrtle wood trim. We suggest that you take the 330Ci for frequent
jaunts on winding back roads, as it is here that you'll experience the endorphin
surges that come with world-class handling. To further the excitement, order the
car with the Sport package, which includes a sport-tuned suspension, sport seats
and bigger wheels and tires. Finally, don't let this category deceive you
this is the coupe we would buy if we had more than 30 grand to spend, but you
can have one for just under $35,000.
Honorable Mention: Mercedes-Benz
CLK 320/430
Luxury is synonymous with Mercedes, and the CLK lives up to that name. Based on
the previous-generation C-Class sedan running gear and available with either a
V6 or V8 in coupe or convertible format, the CLK appeals to people who place sports
car performance and the availability of manual transmissions secondary to comfort
and convenience. A 3.2-liter V6 engine making 215 horsepower and 229 pound-feet
of torque powers CLK320 models. CLK430 models receive a 275-horsepower 4.3-liter
V8 engine. Either model manages to impress thanks to its classic and elegant styling
and well-appointed cabin. If you're in the market for a satisfying luxury coupe,
it's hard to go wrong with this beautiful Benz.
