Sport Coupe Under $30,000
Winner: Toyota
Celica
"Every bit as razor sharp as it looks."
Introduced in 2000, the latest Toyota Celica is a sharp, if somewhat high-strung,
performer. There are two versions on sale: a base-level Celica GT and a more-powerful
GT-S. The GT model's adequate 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine produces 140 horsepower,
while the GT-S generates 180 ponies thanks to variable valve timing technology.
It also comes standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. In terms of handling,
the Celica is one of the best sport coupes available. Suspension and braking systems
provide outstanding handling and performance, and ABS is optional on both models.
The Celica GT rides on 15-inch wheels, while the GT-S can be ordered with 16s.
Celica's interior is stylish, functional and comfortable for two adults and a
healthy amount of their gear. A simple downswept dash layout, big analog gauges,
sporty bucket seats, faux-drilled metal pedals and fashionable metallic silver
accents add to the Celica's cockpit ambience. Until recently, Celicas were generally
considered slow, overweight and expensive. Detractors claimed they were "secretaries'
cars." Not anymore. The 2002 Celica, especially in GT-S trim, is one of the most
exciting sport coupes sold, and it's the one we would put in our garage, if given
the chance.
Honorable Mention: Ford Mustang
Rapidly approaching the big 4-0, Ford's perennially popular Mustang is advancing
upon middle age. But if it's going through a mid-life crisis, nobody is noticing.
If we were to buy a rear-drive sport coupe, the Mustang would be it. There are
six Mustangs from which to choose: the base V6 coupe and convertible, the GT coupe
and convertible and the SVT Cobra coupe and convertible. The V6 makes 190 hp,
while the GT's more powerful 4.6-liter V8 makes 260 hp. Still not enough? The
Cobra's dual-overhead cam V8 makes 320 hp. Even as a practical daily driven car,
the Mustang works well. It has something approaching a real backseat, and gets
decent mileage, provided you don't play stoplight hero too often. Our pick of
the bunch? The Mustang GT.
