Large Luxury Sedan Under $55,000
Winner: Lexus
LS 430
"Unmatched in refinement and creature comforts."
Have you ever been swathed in a pure cashmere blanket in a chichi resort
in Vail, Colo., while a storm rages outside? Well, that's what riding in a Lexus
LS 430 feels like. You're ensconced in one of the most luxurious interiors imaginable,
working to shield you from the vicissitudes and harshness of the outside world.
The LS 430 spoils you with its fine leather and beautiful wood in a cabin as silent
as a mausoleum, which is all the better to enjoy the excellent Mark Levinson sound
system. The Dynamic Laser Cruise Control maintains a proper distance between you
and the car in front of you, and the heated, massaging seats soothe weary back
muscles. A 4.3-liter V8 engine powers the LS 430, offering 290 horsepower and
320 pound-feet of all-over-the-place torque. Zero-to-60-mph acceleration runs
take just 6.4 seconds, an astounding number for this big, heavy sedan. And ride
quality? Pure frictionless silk, yet it manages to maintain its composure even
through twisty roads. Yes, the interior of the Lexus LS 430 (especially one equipped
with the Ultra Luxury package) is a lovely place to be. Now, if all aspects of
life were this comfortable.
Honorable Mention: Cadillac
DeVille
The Japanese may have knocked American cars off the top of the best-selling luxury
cars list, but don't think that we Yanks don't know a thing or two about coddling:
the Cadillac DeVille offers one of the smoothest yet robust rides around. Interior
room is outstanding, with both five- and six-passenger models available, and rear-seat
passengers enjoy a theater-seating layout (for optimum forward visibility). Plus,
you can fly Ol' Glory high and proud on the front fender; Cadillacs are the preferred
conveyance of the Bush administration. God bless the USA!
