Luxury Sport Coupe Over $30,000
Winner: BMW 330Ci
Two years into the E46 redesign, BMW has ensured that it has even fewer competitors. For 2001, the 328Ci swells to the 330Ci after significant increases in horsepower and torque: 225 horsepower (up from 193) and 214 ft-lbs. of twist (up from 206). This healthier coupe runs zero to 60 in 6.4 seconds and offers a broad range of usable torque. Buyers will also find larger brakes and standard 17-inch wheels. And though it shares the platform with its sedan brethren, the coupe has its own sheetmetal and is slightly longer, lower, wider - and sleeker. The 330Ci comes standard with the five-speed manual that enthusiasts demand, but you'll do just fine if you mate the engine with the Steptronic five-speed automatic (this is the same powertrain used in the X5). We suggest that you take the 330Ci for frequent jaunts on winding back roads, as it is here that you'll experience the endorphin surges that come with world-class handling. Finally, don't let this category deceive you - this is the coupe we would buy if we had more than 30 grand to spend, but you can have one for just under $35,000.
