Small Station Wagon Under $20,000

Winner: Ford Focus

We've loved the Focus since its introduction a year ago, so when it came time to pick an economy station wagon, Ford's terrific little five-door came to mind right away. Available only in SE trim, the Focus wagon comes standard with a 130-horsepower Zetec four-cylinder engine. It's definitely not going to win any stoplight showdowns, but the zippy little engine moves the diminutive wagon with enough zest for easy around-town maneuvering and highway merging. The Focus sports a fully independent suspension delivering the smooth, controlled type of ride usually reserved for more expensive wagons. Steering feel is excellent, with a quick ratio providing immediate response, with only three full turns needed for a lock-to-lock maneuver. The brake system features front discs and rear drums with available ABS. The interior of the Focus impresses us with its high quality materials and efficient design. The radio is placed high on the dash for easy tuning and the climate controls are simple and straightforward. The seats are firm and comfortable but some staffers find it hard to find a good seating position. Interior space is generous for a wagon of the Focus' stature, with numerous well-placed placed storage bins, and rear seat occupants will find decent comfort for short trips. The compact wagon marketplace is growing rapidly, but fortunately for the Focus much of the attention seems to be centered within the $25-30K range. Stickering at around $15,000, the Focus should have no problem carving a nice little niche for itself for those looking for practicality at a much more affordable price.
