Small Coupe/Hatchback Under $20,000
Winner: Volkswagen Golf GTI GLS
When the Volkswagen GTI debuted in 1983, it virtually created the "pocket rocket" segment all by itself. Over successive years, the GTI's abilities have waxed and waned, but 2001 certainly brings the GTI closer to a full moon. There are two models available, the GLS and the GLX. Previously, the GLS was equipped with a pokey 2.0-liter engine that did little to further the GTI's heritage. Stepping up to the GLX netted you a more powerful V6, but it also bumped up the price considerably. For 2001, Volkswagen has removed the 2.0-liter engine in the GLS and replaced it with a 150-horsepower, 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. So equipped, the GLS regains much of the GTI magic that made so many people love them in the past. As a further bonus, the GTI comes with an upscale interior, a versatile hatchback body style, an outstanding powertrain warranty, five-star crash protection for driver and front passenger as rated by the feds, and free scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 24,000 miles.
