Large SUV
Winner: GMC Yukon
You've got stuff. You need something to haul your stuff. An '83 Subaru Brat isn't going to cut it. What are you going to get? There are plenty of contestants in the full-size SUV market. All of them are good. But the freshly minted models from GM--the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, as well as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban--are our top choices. While both the Yukon and Yukon XL are, of course, large, the XL's longer wheelbase endows it with a considerably bigger cargo capacity. Both SUVs can seat up to nine passengers. Visually, the new Yukons don't look considerably different than the ones before. The changes underneath and inside, however, are substantial. GMC has improved both handling and braking. There is more headroom and legroom. The interior design is better. For power, your choices are three different V8s, ranking from 275 to 300 horsepower. Four-wheel drive is available on all models. For most families, we feel the Yukon is plenty big enough. But for those families whose needs and desires exceed a piddly Yukon, the Yukon XL should serve nicely.
