Midsize SUV
Winner: Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep did an amazing job of updating an already great SUV when it redesigned the Grand Cherokee in 1999. For 2000 the JGC continues to rule the midsize SUV field with its powerful engine offerings, luxurious interior appointments, comfortable and confident on-road ride, and class-leading off-road ability. The 4.0-liter, inline six-cylinder engine that comes standard in the Laredo models was refined in 1999 and makes a healthy 195 horsepower. The optional 4.7-liter V8 bumps peak horsepower to a neck snapping 235 with 295 ft-lbs. of torque. Jeep's Quadra-Drive four-wheel-drive system makes quick work of slippery surfaces while its high-travel suspension allows for "billy-goat" class rock climbing. If your demands for a midsize SUV run to the extremes in both on and off-road capabilities, Jeep's Grand Cherokee is simply the only vehicle worth considering.
