Winner: Mazda Miata
Introduced as a 1990 model, Mazda's back-to-basics sports car was a smash success right out of the box. With peppy performance from its four-cylinder engine and handling like that of a go-kart, the small two-seater offered all the fun of the old British roadsters, such as Triumphs and MGs, coupled to superior Japanese reliability and build quality. Mazda redesigned the Miata last year, keeping all the car's inherent goodness while still making some worthwhile changes. The most noteworthy improvements are increased engine output (now rated at 140 hp) and a change from a plastic back window to a glass unit. Exposed headlights and more aggressive body contours freshened up the car's looks. For a base price of around $20,000, the Miata offers up a fun driving experience unmatched by any other car near its price range.
