Winner: Subaru Legacy Outback

With all-wheel drive, a gutsy powertrain, a roomy interior and a well-deserved reputation for quality, this selection was a no-brainer. Look past the faux-SUV styling cues and you'll find a competent wagon that can crawl over terrain that the neighbor's Taurus can't. Tidy exterior packaging blends with an airy cabin to provide the Outback with a light and lively feel. A cold weather package provides seat warmers, heated exterior mirrors and a wiper deicer. While this design is aging rapidly (particularly the dashboard's ergonomics), no wagon under $25,000 beats the Outback for everyday practicality with a splash of panache.
