Road Tests: Long-Term Test
1998 Cadillac Seville
January, 2000
By editors at Edmunds.com
Date Posted 01-01-1999
Our long-term Seville found itself caught in another Midwestern snowstorm and then spent a busy week shuttling our Detroit editor all around town for media events and press conferences in conjunction with the North American International Auto Show.
The Caddy worked well in the 2- to 3-inch dusting of the white stuff that descended on Southeastern Michigan recently. Road-hugging weight, front-wheel drive, traction control and stability control all conspired to offer a feeling of confidence when driving on slippery roads. Its V8 engine is smooth and easy to modulate, so it's not like driving other V8-powered Detroit iron on slick streets.
The Caddy's quick-to-warm-up Northstar engine also makes nice work of defrosting the glass and the car's chilly passengers, although we wished our Seville was equipped with heated seats. The smallish-looking trunk has proven to somehow hold all the stuff a family of four needs to carry along, so we remain quite surprised.
Comfort is great, but the seatbelts are still on the cumbersome side. And with a big trip out West coming up, John has officially given up trying to solve the mystery of the occasional front-end shudder during slow takeoffs. And the same goes for the mysterious behavior of key fobs 1 and 2, which still don't always revert to pre-set driver memory positions. And forget about that Velcro-attached storage bin mounted to the right-front kick panel - John just put it in the trunk to keep it from being kicked off every day.
We're sure John will have plenty to say after piloting the Caddy from Detroit to Phoenix at month's end, en route back to California.
Total Odometer Reading: 30,023 Best Fuel Economy: 17.6 Worst Fuel Economy: 15.0 Body Damage: $0 Maintenance Costs: $0 Problems: Occasional front-end shudder during slow takeoffs; key fobs 1 and 2 still don't always revert to pre-set driver memory positions; storage bin loosely mounted to the right-front kick panel comes off.
