We spent 14 days probing each of these vehicles and came up with 10 features
we feel that cars of this caliber must either possess or offer in order to compete.
Looking over this list, we realized that many of these items must be integrated
into the car; they can't simply be tacked on as an afterthought. It's what we
call baked-in luxury, and the European makes excelled in this regard. The Mercedes-Benz
was the winner here, with most of the features available as a standard feature.

Automanual transmission (or the choice of manual) No, it's not
as satisfying to drive as a true manual, but we always appreciate it when carmakers
offer some semblance of sportiness. It allows you to pick your own gears in
the twisties without eschewing the convenience of an automatic for that traffic-clogged
commute. Some units, like that of the Lexus and BMW were excellent, while the
others need more tweaking in order to garner our full approval. The Catera,
Millenia and I30 were the only four-speeds in the test.
Dual zone automatic climate control All of our cars came with
automatic climate control, but we feel that those households with dual zone
cars will be subject to less quarreling. Why bicker about how cold the interior
should be when there's so many other things to disagree about? The Mercedes,
Volvo, Lincoln and Cadillac had this useful feature.
Multi-disc in-dash changer We laud this easy-to-use, convenient
feature. Why not credit for those who provide glove-box or trunk-mounted units?
Those are easy enough to install in the aftermarket arena. An in-dash changer
shows you that the manufacturer cares. Acura, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda and Volvo
care.
One-touch open/close sunroof, windows This is one of our bugaboos.
Readers may bash us for being too lazy to close the windows and criticize us
for being unappreciative that we even have power windows or a sunroof. However,
we view it more as a safety issue: the less time your hands have to be away
from the steering wheel, the better.
Navigation system Sure, most of us prefer having a map in the
back seat and preferably one that's less than 10 years old, thank you
very much. When it comes to finding yourself in an unfamiliar neighborhood beyond
the scope of your well-worn city map, there's nothing like the disembodied voice
of the navigation lady to lead you back to the safety of your own 'hood.
Power seats As basic as this feature might seem in this price
category, not all of our cars came equipped with power seats. The BMW was the
most derelict in this regard, and they only came as an expensive option in the
Lexus.
Side Curtain Airbags All of our cars had side airbags, but we
like the security of knowing that our noggins will be protected in case of a
side impact. Only the European makes offer a head protection system, but we're
hoping that the other carmakers will follow the trend.
Stability Control Whether you're a maniacal driver, or a normal
one who inadvertently got in over your head, you'll thank your lucky stars for
this advancement, which applies power or brakes to direct your vehicle back
onto its intended course. See our article
for details.
Tilt/telescoping steering wheel Simple enough, yet most imperative
in achieving a perfect driving position for maximum comfort and optimal posture.
It doesn't have to be power adjusted; just give us the choice. Even a Ford Focus
has one of these.
Xenon headlamps These babies light up the night like nobody's
business. When you're driving down the road at night, nothing says "There's
a luxury car heading my way!" like a pair of bright blue orbs blinding you.
Make sure they're on your vehicle, as well.
