Re: Fuel pick-up problem [carlamigo]
by mchabra on Tue Feb 14 13:19:21 PST 2006
My fuel gauge in the cab wasn't working so I ended up taking the bed of the truck off rather than dropping the fuel tank. It was easier because there was a lot of fuel left and easier to work on because of the tight working conditions. When I had taken the fuel sending unit out, it turned out that the whole unit was mangled. The device is adjustable for various tanks and one of the brass screws came out of the adjuster so that the unit was semi-apart in the tank. Taking the unit out, securing it with new and stronger screws, a new fuel level sending unit, and then putting it back solved my problem. Look at the diagram for the fuel unit thats in a dodge book and maybe it'll help you to diagnose your problem. :)

I had this same problem with my 3500 Cummins Dually. Firtly, I had taken the truck to a shop that does nothing but front-end repairs and they told me that this is a common problem among dodge front-end designs. About $1300.00 later, I practically had a new front end. The track bar, both left and right sway bar connectors w/ new ball joints, and steering damper. They said that mostly the track bar is what caused the problem, but that a combination of all these issues have culminated into the severity of the problem. They also aligned the front end. Thus far, I have had no problems with it and its been about a year now. Hope this helps! I wouldn't suggest doing this yourself because the alignment is best done through computers and professionals. Good Luck! :)

Also, after driving for abour twenty minutes the truck begins to shake for about a minute and then stops. This then repeats. I'm going about 65-70 on the highway and this concerns me too. It a newer development but becoming an issue. I had also forgot to mention that this is an automatic transmission. Thanks for reading and your help!

I have a 1995 Cummins dually and have been recently driving about 150 miles constantly. The truck runs great around town, however the problem arises when on the interstate/main highways. Simetimes when accelerating, once I hit 55mph, the truck will stop speeding and the rpm will continue to rise. If I let the truck speed fall down to 46mph or so, it will then engage and then proceed to accelerate beyond 55mph. Once over that, the truck will sometimes slip out of gear or the rpms will race when I go to pass someone. I have no idea what the could be. Can someone please help! I'll explore whatever ideas are out there. I just want to feel like I'm in a reliable truck again. Thanks!

Make sure you understand what this does -- it's essentially a fancy line-out converter that will take the speaker level leads from the factory radio, signal process them to remove any unwanted equalization (based on a calibration) and then make the cleaned up signal available for amplifiers. It also provides extra line-in capabilities going to the amps. It DOES NOT provide a true line-in to the head unit, which is what we are all seeking! When using the CleanSweep's line-in, it passes the signal to the amplifiers which means you cannot control the volume using the factory radio (in fact, the factory radio is pretty much irrelevant at that point). The CleanSweep includes a separate volume knob for this purpose. In the end, you could achieve the same thing by hooking up your iPod directly to an amplifier with a gain/volume control in between, such as provided by the $30 Belkin Auto-Kit (or just use the iPod's slightly noisier headphone output and the iPod's own volume control). The true benefit of the CleanSweep is that you can use it to clean up the factory speaker signal, which may have pre-canned equalization. The Legacy/Outback radios, and other Subaru radios, have a preset bass-reducer equalization that kicks in at high volume levels to keep the factory speakers from distorting. If you are going to install amps and high quality speakers downstream of the head unit, then this is unwanted. However, if you're keeping the factory speakers, you're probably better off with the preset eq curve. So the upshot -- if you're spending at least $1200-1500 on good amps and speakers (amps are required with the CleanSweep) and want to retain the factory head unit, the CleanSweep is a great idea. For any other purpose, it's not really needed. In fact, the radio in my 05 XT gives unmolested sound up to about a volume level of 17, and this would be suitable for my purposes when adding amps. The bass-reducing eq kicks in above volumes of about 20 or so. I honestly could get by with a volume range of 0-17, so I would not even benefit from a clean sweep when adding amps and speakers. However, people who want a volume resolution less than 1/17 may want to look into it. BTW, the VP of JL Audio, Manville Smith, is a poster over on the other Legacy forum and is a heck of a nice guy. He drives a GT and of course, has a pretty nice audio setup! CRaig
I'm a happy guy! Great NJ body shop experience.

After 8 days in an Avalon, I'm back in my 2.7T as of this past Tuesday. My '01 2.7T needed a new right front fender after I'd unintentionally customized it on some roadside debris. It's silver, and I've had it a little over a year. I called my salesperson at Audi of Mendham, Bonnie Manniello, for a recommendation and she recommended Foreign Specialties in Manville. Audi of Mendham and Audi of Bernardsville refer all their body work to this shop. It's the best body shop experience I've had. The car looks literally as good as new, the cut lines are perfect and the paint is expertly blended. Just as importantly, the folks at Foreign Specialties are good to do business with. They're friendly, direct, and honest and do what they say they will. This is distinctly different from previous body shop experiences I've had. It looks like about half their work is Audi's. When I picked it up, we talked a little about their business, and the gentleman explained they started doing just restoration work. I think this helps explain their skill level. And boy, am I happy to have my car back! I learned to appreciate it all over again. My initial positive impression of the Avalon faded fast because of uncomfortable seats, and handling limits that were low and scary as you approached them. This past weekend I had that car out on my normal two lane twisties, and it and I were unhappy. It didn't like them at even moderate speeds. It was joyless and worrisome as I attempted to transition through switchbacks. Poorly balanced, understeering, lacking in feedback with obviously no extra margins beyond it's intended uses. Even worse than my unlamented former ES300. It's OK, and even pleasant around town and up to 75mph or so on the highway, but go beyond it's comfort zone and you won't want to. The quality of my A6 is second to none. It's beautiful, comfortable interior, build quality, handling (Yes, even with the non-sport compared to most other sedans.) and power are a total joy once again.
