all right. Here's the deal. I don't like what's going on. Congress will offer a bailout, GM, Ford and Chrysler can't fail. Well, maybe Chrysler-Cerberus will. But I, if you will recall, have been laid off twice from a company called The Boeing Company. And, I have pulled myself up by my bootstraps and re-trained for a totally different career, the Allied Health field. So, I had to tie all of the bureacracy and red tape together, study hard, and I mean study hard, and I made it. I can't help but think internally on this one. I can tell you from personal experience that there is life after a manufacturing job. rock, tell me the truth here. Do you, in your heart of hearts, think GM can pull out of their large Depression with a, oh, let's say $50 Billion dollar Federal Government bailout? Or are we just going to be prolonging everyone's misery. I remember 2002 at Boeing, everyone's productivity was being shot to hell because all everyone wanted to do was put down Phil Condit and Harry Stonecipher(two Boeing CEO's of that era). I mean, SPEEA got all the socialist juices going, but they also stirred the pot so that working on real Boeing jet aircraft drawings became a background hobby for us. I am saying that the healthcare industry is hiring, you've just got to go out and line up some trianing for yourself. It's honest work, though, sure, my college tuition and books were paid for by The Trade Act, but it was done honestly and in view of all authorities. This GM bailout is starting to smell of lobbyist-disease and pork-barrel large corporate hand-wringing and handouts. It's starting to really smell. I'm saying these people who are UAW can find another way out than working for GM. And why not large numbers of them? Huh?

I think a manufacturer with a short and violent future "gives the public what they want", but a really brilliant manufacturer *creates* their own audience. Were Americans clamoring for hybrids? I don't think so. You'd never guess it from viewing prior sales reports. Did they really protest up and down the streets demanding that all their cassette tape machines be rendered obsolete for CDs? No, they had to be taught (marketed to) the benefits of the new stuff. Toyota invented "feel good marketing" (well Volvo really invented it I guess), not GM. GM invented "built tough" and "like a rock" which is okay but what does that mean exactly? Personally I think if you only *listen* to the public, you are going to get a lot of screwy, conflicting messages. I think politics rather proves that. But if you are the *framer* of the debate, you gain power. Same with marketing I think, cars, fashion, video games, whatever.
Drive on!

cdnpinhead, I just noticed you're another one of us Arizona Edmunds members. I'm heading up there towards your area from Willcox on Monday, to get my '08 Lancer GTS detailed with an 'Auto Butler' paint protectant treatment. I get it every 6 months from the dealer I bought the Lancer from, Avondale Mitsubishi in Avondale, AZ. But what I wanted to comment on was your statement on driving and how much you like it. Drive on, because driving is not illegal, there's an oil company around that wants your ghastly dollar and a service station that wants your ghastly dollar, too. But driving is fun and a form of entertainment for a lot of us automotive enthusiasts. And whether we drive a rig with an ICE, hybrid, or all-electric, I believe it is important to be able to feel free to do just that. Drive our rigs with glee...I love driving around Arizona and New Mexico seeing new places and learning about the people of that land. Around here are the Chiricahua National Monument(the "land of standing rocks" the native Indians called them) with their enchanting rock spire formations, that are truly fascinating to see. Only about 37 miles south of Willcox, too. There is Fort Bowie, where Geronimo was held by the U.S. Army, after finally catching the great Apache warrior, back in 1886. Fort Bowie's ruins are available for viewing and they are only 25 miles SE of my home. More interesting rock formations are found in Texas Canyon with the Dragoon Mountain range and their rocks resting on top of other rocks and abnormalities are great to visit. I-10 actually runs right between the formations. Cochise Stronghold is about 45 miles west of me here in Willcox, and that is the proud Chief Cochise's old hiding place from the Cavalry and anyone else he didn't want to find him. We drove up to see a Foghat concert in October of '07 near Wickenburg, AZ, about 60 miles or so NW of Phoenix. The next day we left our motel and drove up to the Grand Canyon. I have never seen anything like that place and heartily await our next visit. When my son ran up to the edge on the SE area of the South Rim, he just stopped in his tracks and stared in amazement. "Dad, you're not gonna believe this!" He's right, I couldn't believe the beauty I was staring at. Incredible, awe-inspiring natural beauty that just went on and on. Point is, fact is, this country has benefited greatly from the automobile and it's availability to people. It's given us freedom and mobility that can't be rivalled by the horses and the carriages. Agreed? If we still have a rig with a ICE, and most of us do, I am for driving as much as we can afford to drive and for as long and far as we want. Restricting that idea is bad for business, bad for the economy and bad for our emotional health collectively. But it's an individual thing that varies according to the person, agreed. The environmentalists will never be satisfied, whatever propels our automobiles. You realize that, don't y'all? And if you love a manual-trannied rig way more than an automatic-trannied rig, ya know what, you've got that right. Once again, it's an individual thing. I think that with the advent of hybrid and all-electric propulsion technology you're gonna have to be ready to abandon your stickshift vehicle, however. Reading up on the subject points me to things like automatic push-button starts for new world order rigs like this. And after starting the rigs, I am reading of the implementation of simple levers for putting the power to the wheels, like "forward" and "reverse" buttons. Does that doom the manual tranny? I don't think so. Especially if you've got some awesome backyard mechanical skills, gentlemen. I am starting to see the end of the manual transmission. But that's just my view, my car-nut buddies. Think I'll go exploring in the Lancer GTS. And I'll feel good about doing just that, too. :shades:

Wow. I'm almost 6'5" and fit easily in the G35 (headroom and leg room). Does the steering wheel get in the way of your legs? Just curious where you don't fit. That's exactly what I posted about...people the same ht or taller who fit in cars I can't drive (I'm 2" shorter). What year is yours & does it have PMR? IIRC the dealer told me he knows of no such thing as a current G35 w/ a solid roof. (Sidebar: IMHO the PMR is the most useless car invention ever; I assume my height & fit is somewhat related to my opinion but really: does anyone ENJOY the sun stomping down on their head while they drive? As a person having ridden over 250k miles on motorcycles I'll pass.) I get my wind thrills the real way, on local mountain bike trails going downhill at speed over rocks as big as my head (big head, big feet, two outa three ain't bad). Unfortunately can't remember exactly what didn't fit...very possibly legs...I've got huge thighs (maxed out the leg press machines back in the day). One of my most common problems is extremely (as in dangerously) limited vision around the stoooped rear view mirror (the latest Genesis comes to mind). Vision generally is improved when there is an articulating arm for this mirror, allowing me to angle the arm fore or aft in order to raise the mirror height so I can avoid running over those mundane objects such as.....oh, pedestrians & such! Unfortunately, as time progresses it becomes more common for manufacturers to stuff ever more electronics into the mirror; the more the electronics the less likely is there an articulating arm.
Re: Gear Popping/Grinding Problem 3rd and 4th Gear in Honda Manual 6 Speed [sky16]
by mdebrito on Sun Oct 05 16:21:05 PDT 2008
sky16, Today is exactly one year since I bought the 2007 Accord EX-L 6-speed sedan. The problem started about December and was in the dealership to have the tranny fluid changed with the reformulated honda tranny fluid. The problem went away for two weeks and promptly returned. April 12th, honda issued the long awaited TSB. In June the car went dealership. 6 WEEKS later the car came back after 4 tranny removal/installations. The details are ugly, reverse was lost, multiple 3rd gear kits were used. (Yes, I had a loaner that was a rock solid Accord 4cyl automatic. No, rattles, the honda I expected.) My car had rattles, the glove box, the driver door window rattle, the driver door lock area rattle. I got my car back. The rattles were not fixed. Back four more times for the rattles. The glove box was fixed, there is a solution dealerships can look up. The window rattle was gone with another well known fix using tape and not only lubricatiing the window. My door lock rattle is the most annoying of all. That stupid thing was gone when I got the car back... two weeks later it came back. ANNOYING! I'm too tired to take it back right now. This has been going on since August. Another thing, the interior rear view mirror stinks. It has a constant vibration even after it was replaced. I hate it. Anyway, those are my issues with the car. Now that it is getting colder, that will be the real test. The issue was much much worse when it was cold outside. Best wishes with yours.
