Ladas
by luckylucien on Fri Mar 14 23:09:42 PDT 2008
I saw and rode in a lot of Lada cabs when I was in Egypt last winter. Most of them were mid to late 1970s, and the drivers drove like maniacs in downtown Cairo, Alexandria and Luxor, Aswan too. 10 EP (about $2) would get you anywhere in downtown Cairo. From what I could gather most drivers were their own mechanics. If you want a good looking car, DO NOT GET A LADA, but if you want a DURABLE car, the Lada is the one to get, IF you can find one. Durable, like built like a tank. Funny looking, but then folks won't look at you, that is if you are funny looking!!!

That's very true. People who bought hybrids these past few years really did so because of a change of mindset, not just because of the fuel mileage (which isn't that substantially better than a "regular" car). One sure way to change behavior is with *social* incentives. If a person receives as much admiration for his EV as for his Hummer, well then, things will change. Look at bicycles. 50 years ago, the only adults you saw riding bicycles were the witch in the Wizard of Oz, and eccentric weirdos on 1950s TV sitcoms. In the 60s and 70s, the only people driving diesels were old men in berets and taxi drivers in Cairo. I thought the comment about a Yaris for $25,000 with a genuine 150 mile range was right on. That sounds about "market correct", that is, something that could actually sell right here, right now.
2005 Liberty - Speedometer AND DYING Issues
by cairo2 on Fri Feb 16 23:29:48 PST 2007
Note - I am NOT an owner but a garage owner in Cairo Egypt which makes it even more difficult to trouble shoot some of these problems. 2005 Jeep Liberty with less than 5,000 miles which has been through the issues - faulty water pump - replaced. faulty A/C compressor - replaced and then the speedometer quitting completely. Put it on OBD II and indicated speedometer sensor - replaced one sensor - still the same problem and was considering ordering the second sensor from the States to see if this would solve the problem when the owner came up with a new problem. Driving after about 1/2 hour - transmission "lurched" slightly then all electrics died and car died. After a few minutes - car would start up again and be good for another 5 minutes of driving - then same problem again. Got cat to my garage and just let is sit running. After a period of time - while watching - speedometer would jerk up to 10, 20 30 MPH - then back to 0. Again this would happen until finally car would stop - no electics. After starting (no problem) same thing happened after 5 minutes. OBD only indicates P0501 - speed sensor fault. Suggestions please - and please don't say take to the dealer as they are non-existant and worthless here.
2006 Impala experience/fuel economy
by nosirrahg on Wed May 31 21:31:51 PDT 2006
I rented a 2006 Impala over the weekend to make the drive to Indianapolis for the 500 (which was great despite the heat). We stopped for gas somewhere north of Cairo, IL on the way there, and because the Illinois State Police were enforcing the 65MPH speed limit pretty heavily, I set the cruise control at 65 and left it there. According to the DIC we were getting 35 MPG as we crossed into Indiana, so I exited in Terre Haute and filled it up to see how accurate that was. We'd driven 174 miles at an average speed (per the DIC) of 64 MPH, on 4.836 gallons of fuel, which figures out to 35.98 MPG!! And that's with the AC on the entire trip (exterior temps were in the mid-80s as I recall). This car had @ 22k miles on it (which had been put on in the past 8 months), so it was well broken in which probably helped. The best mileage I've ever gotten in my 3.8l 2000 Impala was @ 34 MPG, and that was driving @ 60 MPH in the Arkansas Delta (absolutely flat) with no AC (temps in the 50s), so getting 36 MPG with the AC on in the rolling hills of southern Illinois was darn impressive.
