Re: 1982 SL 380 Softtops [toddbenson]

This link should show you the different textures for your top. You need a canvas, not a vinyl. 380SL tops CAVEAT: I don't know this company from a hole in the wall so I'm not recommending them one way or the other. I did find them from a positive recommendation from a 380SL owner. As for installation, some owners have claimed to do it themselves, but my recollection is that you need a fair amount of skill and patience to pull that off yourself. I'd suggest the "German" canvas rather than the American stayfast, but both look fine, and if the convertible top fabric is a bit "off" in texture it certainly isn't going to affect the value of this particular type of car. What you DON'T want to do (not that you would) is put on a vinyl top, which I do see now and then.
Re: 2001 VW Cabrio Convertible Canvas Roof Coming Unglued!!! [bluefx]

I lived down in S. Florida and the stitching came undone on my top, I had it resewn a year ago. This year, the window became unglued from the canvas. I took it to several places, and my only option was to replace the top for about $1800. If it is stitching, you can have it sewn, I had mine done for around $300 in West Palm Beach at a little canvas shop off of Okeechobee, not far west of 95. Honestly, you are lucky that you found someone to do it that way, the dealership told me I had to replace it completely and I found the guy to stitch it on my own.
2001 VW Cabrio Convertible Canvas Roof Coming Unglued!!!
by bluefx on Wed Sep 10 13:26:08 PDT 2008
I've learned a lot from reading the blogs on the Cabrio and see that a lot of folks have the same issues I do with the Cabrio convertible I just purchased. The roof automatic motor stopped working (I have a button to raise and lower it on my dash) AND the factory glue just above the rear window where the roof bends started coming unglued and slowly but surely, it's coming apart all the way across. Not good since we just skidded by Hurricane Ike here in South Florida. The guy I bought the car from gave me an upholstery shop number in Ft. Lauderdale who wants $400 cash to remove my top, sew up the roof and replace it. He also told me he would look at the motor to see why it wasn't working , but I'm sure. I saw some folks were buying glue for the seam. Anyone use glue and have success? In Florida? Does anyone in Hialeah or South Florida know of other upholstery locations that will remove, sew and replace a Cabrio top? If the top looks brand new, is it better to repair than to replace??? Any other recommendations in terms of vendors/mechanics/upholstery shops in the South Florida area would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks.

I think a few more beers are in order to reconsider this project, if you don't mind me saying. I know, I know, "follow your bliss" and all that, but this project is going to be VERY expensive ( and is scary expensive) and a big money-loser. Not only that, you may end up with a car much less enjoyable than you thought. How 'bout a compromise and install a full-roof Wabasto sunroof? (canvas pull type). Otherwise, I'd plan on spending at least $40,000 -- $50,000 on this project for a car worth $10,000 when you are done with it. There's plenty of talent in Los Angeles among the custom car builders, but the labor rates are very high for this level of not only restoration skill, but expert pattern-cutting, fabrication and computer-engineering.

 Obviously an act of some sick iindividual  Anyhow, now that you gotta deal with it, Have you tried any of the convertible top cleaners? I use Wolfstien's Raggtopp and it is pretty good overall. I have never had to deal with any stains, duct tape, gu etc... but I wa always able to notice the difference after the top dried out. Good Luck!! --njexpress
Re: 08 Frontier SE 4x4 V6 auto + F01 $17,725 [picante]
by jfritsch on Sun Aug 10 15:24:29 PDT 2008
MSRP on a crew cab 4x4 se automatic with the value truck package is almost 27000. If your info is correct, if not you have probably have a manual trans. TMV has been a joke in one way or another for years, possibly (or not) on cars but epecially off on trucks, especially now. If you can get an 26700 se 4x4 crew auto with pwr and alloys for 17700 or thereabouts, you need a new truck, even if you have to get less than the books for your 95. That truck is ancient and the 05 redesign on a great improvement over the 04's much less that. If its a 26500 truck, canvas the dealers, try to work them down and buy it for 17700 if not. There is no such thing as a sweet 13 year old truck. (only of the memories of what you did in the back ;) ) This is a low volume vehicle. If a cars.com search within 30 miles produces only 20 or so hits do it, don't screw around too long for another 1000. Good luck --jjf FYI Tonkin Nissan in Wilsonville, OR has been advertising on their Web site: 2008 Frontier SE 4x4 V6 automatic + F01 (Value Truck Package) for $17,725 According to Edmund's: MSRP = $25,260 Invoice = $23,691 TMV = $21,659 I haven't checked this out personally, but thought it might be a helpful reference point. I have a sweet '95 Nissan V6 4x4 with only 45K miles, so I'm just waiting to see if they get even more desperate. Would jump at $16,500. (May not happen, but I don't really need a new truck.) -- Paul
