95 1500 4X4 360 No Reverse slipping in forward under hard excelleration
by nukeem on Sat Nov 15 05:01:27 PST 2008
Hi, First time posting here (great info everywhere too), but I still have some questions. OK, Picked up another Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 5.9(360) automatic w/OD for $1,000 yesterday. Anyway, the truck does absolutely nothing when shifted into reverse but runs and shifts good though all 4 forward gears with a little slippage when accelerating hard in first gear only. The truck has 189,000 miles and suspect its just worn out but will start going through things today. Any suggestions on what to do? Fuild/filter change? Additives? I have always drove Dodge trucks since the mid 80s and all are manual trannys, this is my first automatic. Is it cheaper to get a rebuilt tranny or rebuild/have rebuilt? The owner said it it will not go into 4X4 mode, read up on the actuator so will be checking that today also. Is it possible that no reverse and no 4X4 are both a bad vacuum problem and related? It also has a check engine light on so I will get that code read out today too. Idle is a little rough but smooth power under acceleration. Sorry for all the question, Thanks for any help! Gary (retired USAF)

"...I would prefer an Earth with an average temperature of 75F..." Since the current average temperature of earth is 59F going up to 75F would be quite a jump. Better start driving a couple million SUVs. ;)

The article about the orbit of the Earth and the amount of solar radiation, and whether we have a climate like now or a Snow-Ball Earth, is exactly what I was referring to a couple of weeks ago. The solar activity and our orbit are the main controls on our climate. All energy on Earth has its origin in the Sun, and its gravitational energy to in the first place form the planets. The Sun provides the main gravitational energy of keeping the Earth orbiting, and of the Earth rotating. The Sun provides all the solar energy which over past millenium allowed the materials to grow and then be converted into our stores of NG, oil, and coal. It is now the sun that provides the Earth with the energy to stay on average 500F warmer than the void of space. Without the sun keeping that warmth, or even +450F when we swing to a wider orbit this planet would be frozen solid in the billions of years without it. The sun was, is, and will be the main control of what happens on Earth. I would prefer an Earth with an average temperature of 75F.

Gary you do understand what supply chain means? Yes I do. The mom & pop shops supplying parts to the automakers. That was clear in my copy and paste. My response to rocky was his assertion that ALL Japanese autoworkers are treated great. Evidently they are not. By contrast I do not hear a lot of rumblings from the foreign auto workers in the USA. My very high quality Sequoia was built very near to my POC 2005 GMC PU truck, in Indiana. Why would that be? Partly because GM puts more into labor and less into quality parts. if union workers make $73 an hour then how long will it be before nonunion workers make the same, are you going to try and say nonunion workers do not want to make $73 an hour, - i would say not. Maybe never. Toyota is threatening to cut back wages. For myself I always wanted more pay. I would say that is human nature. One contract we were dealing with a board appointed general manager that was not the sharpest pencil in the box. He offered us more in our 3 year Union extension than we asked for. The Union boss turned it down and we got what we originally proposed. The reason being is he was going to have to negotiate with AT&T after our contract was signed. The AT&T technicians would want as much as we got and there was no way the Union could get that from AT&T. For the 25 years that I worked for that company we always were at the leading edge of wages and benefits. Mainly because the company had difficulty getting people to work in the Arctic away from family. That was why we made more than the average US telephone Technician. Why does the UAW person make more than the Toyota worker right in the same state? GM cannot compete with Toyota on that playing field. the fact of the matter is that not everybody can get a job there I sure agree with you there. The UAW hiring practices have never been FAIR. Either controlled by family, affirmative action or good old boy network. The Hoodlum mentality at the UAW and many other Unions has helped alienate MOST of the US population against Unions. As a Teamster I had a lot of people look down their nose at me. I just laughed it off all the way to the bank. The Bailout is a loan.., It all gets paid back Says who? GM already owes $70+ billion to the lenders. They cannot sell their cars at a profit with their high costs. They lose money every quarter. So just how are they going to pay back an additional $25 billion? It is money down the toilet pure and simple. If it is approved which does not look likely it will be a gift from all of US to the few of YOU. It will be more Spreading the Wealth Around. Just more Corporate welfare.

Working conditions in Japan called Sweatshop by Toyota workers. Gary you do understand what supply chain means? If your going to read it, read it right and entirely. Japan does use temp workers and suppliers. These aren't the natives. I saw the way they treat non-Japanese workers as oppose to their own kind/family. Your failing to see their culture and or seeing their culture from an American prospective.

Laugh-Out-Loud Funny Stuff Scheduled shifts in Earth's orbit should plunge the planet into an enduring Ice Age thousands of years from now but the event will probably be averted because of man-made greenhouse gases, scientists said Wednesday. They cautioned, though, that this news is not an argument in favour of global warming, which is driving imminent and potentially far-reaching damage to the climate system.
