Re: Car and Driver 1st Drive, Car Connection Test [mackabee]

If that is Toyota's attitude, they are in trouble for the long term. The thing is, the current Corolla isn't "broken." But its competitors have improved a lot in the past six years. Maybe a more appropriate metaphor is, if Toyota, known as a world-class runner in the past, is content now to stoll leisurely down the path with the Corolla, their competitors, who are running faster, will pass them by. Toyota's reputation as a world-class runner won't help them win races in the future.

fleet down at GM for year 27%
by 62vetteefp on Thu Jun 21 13:54:48 PDT 2007
General Motors Corp. (GM) sales analysis chief Paul Ballew said Thursday the company is implementing a "significant decline" in fleet sales to rental car companies, noting that the auto maker plans to cut rental-car sales by 20,000 vehicles during June. In a conference with the media, Ballew said the company is undertaking one of its major monthly fleet-sales cuts in June, and that could affect the auto maker's total sales volume for the month. He did not give a specific forecast for GM's June sales performance, which will be reported July 3. GM's U.S. sales fell 3.4% through the first five months of the year, all because of the cuts in rental-car sales, which are generally considered to be less profitable than sales on the retail level. Retail sales at dealerships were up 2% through May. GM is trying to boost sales to certain fleet customers, such as commercial clients who use medium-duty trucks, Ballew said. GM cut sales to rental-car companies by 79,301, or 27%, in the first five months of the year as it aims to improve the profitability of its North American operations, which continue to lose money due to high costs, production cuts and other factors. By cutting sales to rental fleets, LaNeve said the auto maker has been able to boost the resale value of its cars on the market and boost the profitability of the business it still does with rental-car firms. "That business has become much more profitable for us," LaNeve said. During the same conference, GM Sales and Marketing Chief Mark LaNeve said the auto maker will launch a Fourth of July sale later in June. The sale likely will be a strategic effort to discount vehicles selectively on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis rather than a big blowout clearance sale. GM has been steadily decreasing its reliance on incentives, LaNeve said, indicating that buyers are now flocking to the company's brands in order to take advantage of product features and the company's 100,000-mile warranty, rather than bargain-basement discounts and rebates. LaNeve said GM, which has steadily lost market share in recent years, is ready to start focusing on a plan to accelerate growth. The auto maker is pumping considerable investment into key brands - such as Buick and Saturn - while also revamping its advertising strategy in order to start growing again, especially once the U.S. market picks up again in 2008 and 2009, as GM expects it will. GM plans to ramp up its marketing drive surrounding the company's improving fuel-economy efforts as it tries to shatter market perceptions of the auto maker as being overly dependent on gas guzzlers. LaNeve said that "we need to do more" in terms of advertising spending and other means to push its fuel-economy message. "Our story is much, much better than people give us credit for," he said. The executive pointed out that GM offers 24 models that achieve 30 miles per gallon or more, and it is essentially the fuel-economy leader in trucks and SUVs. Since the late 1970s, GM has improved its passenger-car fleet fuel economy by 133% and its light-truck fleet fuel economy by 75%. Still, LaNeve said, what he describes as the misperception of GM's fuel-economy efforts is one of the most frustrating parts of his job. He said the company's heavy concentration of trucks in its vehicle lineup may continue to be playing a negative role, even as the auto maker has worked to increase fuel economy in that segment. "Our strength in trucks works against us in getting our fuel-economy message out," he said. GM shares recently rose 1%, or 37 cents, to $35.70 on volume of 13.8 million compared with average daily volume of 11.7 million. -By John D. GM to Freeze Pension Plans of White-Collar Workers The Wall Street Journal By John D. Stoll March 8, 2006 DETROIT – General Motors Corp. said it will freeze the traditional pension plans it provides white-collar workers, setting the stage for the automaker to seek pension concessions from the United Auto Workers in contract talks next year. The move, which GM signaled last month, is the latest step in its efforts to cut costs in its unprofitable North American operations. GM said that starting Jan. 1 it will freeze accrued pension benefits for its approximately 42,000 U.S. salaried employees under the current defined-benefit plan formula and begin a shift toward defined-contribution plans, such as 401(k) plans. Defined-benefit plans promise a monthly check based on years of service and wages, but place the financial risk on the employer. Defined-contribution plans – which are increasingly the standard in the private sector and put more of the investing decisions in the hands of employees – place the financial risk on workers. The company expects the shift to result in a $1.6 billion reduction in its pension liability by the end of this year and savings on its pension expenses of about $420 million next year. Last month GM announced it would cap health-care benefits for salaried retirees – saving about $900 million in annual costs on a pretax basis – and said it was evaluating ways to restructure pension benefits for white-collar employees. GM spokesman Jerry Dubrowski said that the pension changes were reviewed by the company's board Monday. He declined to comment on other potential items on the board's agenda, including the company's drive to sell a controlling stake in its General Motors Acceptance Corp. lending arm and to firm up a multibillion-dollar bailout package for its top parts supplier, Delphi Corp., which is under bankruptcy-court protection. Shares of GM rose 48 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $20.29 at 4 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. GM is in the midst of a massive restructuring after losing $8.6 billion in 2005, as the company struggles with a burdensome cost structure and steadily loses U.S. market share to foreign-based competitors. The company has pledged to close 12 manufacturing facilities and shed about 30,000 jobs as part of its plan to restore profitability in its automotive operations. GM isn't set to renegotiate the master labor contract until the second half of 2007. A UAW spokesman had no immediate comment on GM's latest cost-cutting move. GM said it expects to record a pretax charge of $120 million upon re-measurement
