What the oil co giveth NYC taketh away

MTA To Toll All East River Bridges NEW YORK (CBS) ― Believe it or not, there is even grimmer budget news. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is swimming in a sea of red ink and sources tell CBS 2 HD drivers in the city might not like the bailout plan. Nearly half a million cars go back and forth over the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg and 59th Street bridges every day for free. Some people think that's not right. "We already have tolls at the Battery Tunnel, Midtown Tunnel, the Triborough Bridge let's put pricing on all of the crossings in between," said Sam Schwartz, one of the leading transportation engineers in the country. Guess what? State and city officials now seem to agree. Sources tell CBS 2 HD that putting tolls on some or all of the East River bridges is part of the bailout plan being considered for the MTA. "People coming into the city should be paying for some of the service they get," Schwartz said. Better unload those Manhattan penthouses while they still have some value. Only the rich will be able to live in NYC. Then I ask myself why would anyone with money live in ANY big City? $10 gas would not get me into a city.
Local Driving Virginia

Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in as well. Bought a 2008 TL 3.2 in September. I drive 50 miles a day. about 55% highway and 45% surface roads. Having said that, I live in Hampton Roads (Virginia Beach, Norfolk) and the highway is RARELY above 35 mph. I drive I would estimate conservatively. I've been getting 24.8 MPG on 5 tanks. I did just do a short trip to Williamsburg and it looks like I got over 27. Not bad at all. Scott - Virginia Beach.
Baltimore - Williamsburg in a '08 LTZ 6cyl, 6spd

In July my wife, 9-year old, and I took a vacation to Bush Gardens in Williamsburg VA with plenty of luggage. The drive from Baltimore was about 200 miles each direction. We have a 2008 Malibu LTZ, 3.6 6cyl, w/ 6 speed auto transmission. On the way there, which included about a 1 hours back-up near Quantico, we averaged just over 29 MPG. On the way back - and I swear to you, I'm not exaggerating - we averaged 32.2 MPG. Must have been a downgrade or tailwind for the majority of the miles. My daily commute is 35 miles each direction, about 80% of it is highway, and I average between about 26.5 MPG week in, week out. With a 50/50 mix of city/hwy, I get about 21-23 MPG routinely. My wife does not get as good of mileage as I do - our driving styles are very different. She averages about 19-21 with a 50/50 mix of city/hwy. Regards, Misha

New Smart owner

I picked up my Smart about a week ago and I've never had so much fun driving a car. I absolutely love the thing. I have an SUV and a sedan and haven't driven either one since I got the Smart. The car is extremely roomy and has LOTS of power. Drove it home from the dealership about 50 miles on the interstate and had to continuously back off the gas pedal to keep from exceeding 70 mph. It wanted to keep going. Stopped at Costco on the way home from the dealership and put 3 cases of cokes and ice tea in the back along with numerous smaller items and had room left over. It's not for everyone but if you just want to have a fun time driving this is the car. I use manual mode all the time. More fun than automatic. It's got it all--power windows, ABS, ASC, rain sensing wipers, 6 CD changer, rear wipers, good, strong A/c, leather seats, heated seats, etc,, etc. Wife thought I had lost my mind when I ordered it. Now I can't keep her away from it. Played golf this morning. Finished lunch, went to the parking lot, car was gone. Wife had taken the Smart and left her car. Screw Consumer Reports and everyone else who is putting the car down. Talk to the folks who own one and read comments on some of the other Smart forums. They all love it. Will probably get back on the waiting list again and get one for wife so she will stay away from mine.
The big 3 already know

I have a 1989 F700 with a 6.6 liter inline 6 cylinder deisel that weighs 16,000lbs and gets 13mpgs at 70mph highway. I have a 2008 F250 6.4 liter deisel that weighs 10,000lbs and gets 13mpg at 60 mph highway. My 1999 F250 got 20mpgs with the same load the 08 carries now. They obviously aren't trying to get better mileage or they could.
