Re: What $4/gallon gas buys... [lemko]

More disinformation from the general press. Most of U.S. oil imports do not come from the Mideast. http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imp- orts/current/import.html Crude Oil Imports (Top 15 Countries) (Thousand Barrels per Day) YTD 2008, Middle East, Other CANADA ---- 1846 SAUDI ARABIA 1519 ---- MEXICO ---- 1471 NIGERIA ---- 1089 VENEZUELA ---- 1070 IRAQ 693 ---- ANGOLA ---- 556 ALGERIA ---- 495 BRAZIL ---- 174 KUWAIT 218 ---- ECUADOR ---- 200 COLOMBIA ---- 100 CHAD ---- 76 RUSSIA ---- 137 LIBYA ---- 56 Total 2430 7270 About 25% of the imports are from the Middle East. The writer goes on to say; "All this adds up to a decline in our standard of living and a huge write-down of American wealth. " Yeah, and we are doing it to ourselves. We are all making selfish decisions. The people in the M.E. are not putting a gun to our head telling us to buy that vehicle that gets 13 mpg. This is another example of how individuals will make decisions to a large degree in their own self interest. Yet, we complain bitterly if the government tries to impose a CAFE standard, increase the gasoline tax, or suggest we conserve... Didn't Phil Gramm just say "We've sort of become a nation of whiners." Indeed. :shades:

You can go to the EIA site for updated information on imports. http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imp- orts/current/import.html Imports make up about 60% of our consumption. Oil - production: 8.322 million bbl/day (2005 est.) Oil - consumption: 20.8 million bbl/day (2005 est.) Oil - exports: 1.048 million bbl/day (2004) Oil - imports: 13.15 million bbl/day (2004) https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/print/us.html And this site will give you a breakdown of what we turn a barrel of oil into. Oil is used for everything from aviation fuel and asphalt to lubricants and waxes. http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_cons_psup_dc_nus_mbbl_m.htm

Only about 8 percent of our power generation is supplied with oil so even eliminating all of it wouldn't be enough to stop oil imports completely although it would help. You also need to remember that we get most of our oil imports from Canada and Mexico. Canada is the number one importer and Mexico is number three. Saudi Arabia is number two so we do get a fair amount from OPEC nations but not the majority. http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/data_publications/company_level_imp- orts/current/import.html
Mazda 3 and 6

(hate how it makes me put a title in. but whatever..) I didn't notice much difference in real options and equipment between the Civic and the 3, at least on the fully loaded models. Slight things here and there, of course, but they are very close cousins as opposed to something like a VW which is on another entire planet, or a Chevy which might as well be someone out in the Ort Cloud. The smart money is on the less expensive yet similar vehicle, of course. Mazdas are very solid cars.

>...Working on a deal on an '07 LX, new, two-row, I-4. Louisville dealers all connected and TOUGH! But, we may be able to swing the full $4K in rebates ($2500 for the 07 and $1500 "loyalty".) [Gill] Please visit lastchance. com and spend $35 to learn all the facts behind buying. I used their advise and got my Rondo for $1,099 under INVOICE. Becareful of that "loyalty" program because it has disappeared here in the west and is only available in selected mid west and east coast areas. >...The Rondo tags at $18,400. That's $14,400 after the rebates. I'd like $8K for the Sedona but I'm betting they'll head for $7K. Still, this sounds okay to me. [Gill] That seems a little high to me. I can't confirm since my sales contract is in the safe deposit box. >...Ideas? (We want out of the Sedona and the only place we're going to get any trade around here is back at a Kia dealer. Other dealers around here would rather handle anthrax than a Kia.) [Gill] You might want to sell privately. Out here in the Seattle market, next to Subaru, KIA is all you see. >...It'll be the wife's car as is the Sedona now. She sat in it, drove it, and declared it not just "nice" but that she loved it. Easy car to love, and for some odd reason it just "fits like an old shoe". She notes she sits a little lower than the Sedona and liked the old "view" better, but I'm betting she'll adjust quickly, and it sure is better still than a sedan. [Gill] We love our I-4 LX. After we picked it up, we drove to upstate NY, down to D.C, then back to Seattle. The car will be 1 year old the end of this month and we already have 17.5K miles on it. Gas milage is great; 25 in town mixed and 29 on the highway loaded with people and luggage. The only problems I have is that there is a lot of suspension/road noise. Also, the paint is very thin. I have scratches all over my car from the car washes. >...I'm 6'2" at 215 and I fit easily in the back seat, where I was quite completely comfortable and well insulated from road noise and bumps. The Rondo is MUCH less harsh than the Sedona. [Gill] We had two 17 year olds in the back and they were comfortable. Road noise, I would have to disagree with you. >...One item of note: the "extras" at dealers tagged on for margin are simply embarrassing and insulting! [Gill] If you use the fax system from lastchance, you might avoid these items. Also, if they is a Costco near you, ask for a Coastco Automotive quote. Out here is is $100 over invoice. Thay will establish the upper limit of your trading range and represent the worst deal you can get.
