Dealer culture change?
by senket on Mon Jan 21 10:49:01 PST 2008
I just bought an '08 Prius, silver pine, pkg #2, for 23K. I have to say the purchase was an incredibly smooth experience. All the terms were settled via email and phone, no surprises at the showroom, the staff was friendly and fun, and I feel like I got a fair deal. This was the third time I have bought a car. The previous experience, buying my '03 Chevy S10, was also good, although that was all in person. My first, buying my '92 Honda Accord was a nightmare of pushy salespeople who tried to sell me what I didn't want ("What part of manual transmission do you not understand?") Aside from that, my mother was married to a used car salesman, so I spent some of my childhood in that very shady milieu. It seems to me that there has been a real change in dealer mentality over the last 20 years.
Real World Test Drive

After 8,000 miles and watching it closely, MPG is averaging 19.8. Soon you will have a lot more data to evaluate the numbers yourself... Why? On August 24, 2007, a father and son team will set out from Poulsbo, Washington in a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser on a road trip north, into the Arctic Circle. Along the way the adventures hope to raise awareness of the need to eliminate hate and celebration diversity in our communities across the northwest. The adventurers' geographical goal, Deadhorse Alaska, just a stones through from the Arctic Ocean and the northern most US point, accessible by “road”. Daily blogs will relay back mileage, gas usage and other test drive information. You can follow the adventure at Road Trip Adventure BLOG (LastGreatRoadTrip.com). Drop a note at www.LastGreatRoadTrip.com and let us know what other information you would like tracked on this once in a lifetime opportunity. lgrt Celebrate Our Differences and Diversity lastgreatroadtrip.com
Real world test drive

Six months and I still love my FJ... it has seen the commute and the some snow packed back country roads... But what about a real test for the guys (gender neutral, non-specific use of guy) who need city, highway and weekend trail to no-where get-away travel all packed into one... Well I'm going to put 5,000 miles on the rig over 14 days driving from Poulsbo Wa, to the Arctic Ocean, including 800 plus miles on Alaska's most grueling treks, "Haul Road" to Deadhorse. You can follow the adventure at www.lastgreatroadtrip.com I want to provide current and would-be FJ owners insight on the rigs performance... Please help with input on the types of things you would like me to report on. You know the stuff you only find out after your butts been in the drivers seat for 12 hours straight, the coffee is gone, the sun is low and you still don't want to stop until you see what is around the next bend in the trail. I Just bought a 2006 Ford Ranger Sport from Courtesy Ford in Poulsbo, WA. I actually bought this through the Interent from the Fleet Sales Manager. I was a little reluctant to have him search for the Ranger that I built on the Ford Website. But everything went like clockwork. I liked the Ranger and all the afterwork was done in a timely matter. Hey Bruneau1 ol' bud, how ya doing? you re-located to the Kitsap peninsula ? I see you signed off at Poulsbo.Wa. I've been busy the last little while smacking a lot of lips ( huge fightin' salmon kind) in my local river but lately it has been blown out due to much heavy rains and our fishin' season is coming to an end and that means getting bored with cabin fever. Ok, jumping back to the oily stuff discussion. Barnstormer164, Tim156, et al, good to hear you guys are on the right train of thought regarding the application to the Freestyle. So I'm raising my glass of cool beer and hope to be remotely clinking with you guys.As I see it even the lubricant experts are not in full agreement that the 5w-20 viscosity has been proven to handle the longterm OCI's compared to some other heavier weights. Is it that shear stable? Some folks even claim that Ford's call for 5w-20 is mainly for CAFE requirements.I also agree with Barnstormer that going dino or even semi-syn for this weight going beyond 5000 mi is suicidal. At best I would use Mobil Clean 7500 but methinks Mobil Full syn EP is not cost effective. Ok, now to keep some of the other naysayers happy and also to be a little controversial and contradict myself. I bought a case of Esso XD-3 Extra 0w-30 which I will use for my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac for a much longer OCI up to a year or about 9000 mi. This is a HD engine oil designed for fleet/commercial use and only available from an Esso bulk oil facility in Canada. Sorry to say this guys, but not available in the U.S. and also since it is a full polyalphaolefin synthetic and about 40% cheaper than Mobil 1. Eat yer heart out.I'm not an oil geek so check it out in the BITOG forum (Bob is the oil guy) Happy motoring folks ! :) . P.S. Tim156, you said," Ford's not going to take another hit like that again." Yeah, Jac Nasser really took Ford to the cleaners on that Firestone fiasco. But lucky me that Ford replaced them with Michelins LTX for free on my Explorer Sport Trac and I've had them for about 4 years without problems. That cost over $400 for 5 tires and with thousands of trucks/SUV's affected, you do the math.

Willie, glad you are still out there. You may be changing your oil too often, but it won't hurt your vehicle, only your wallet. But it is important to feel comfortable with what we do. My service advisor couldn't get the mileage easily, either. And she is a big liar. I don't dare make a sexist comment, but I wonder how many of these advisors ever actually worked on any cars.
