Unfortunately, if prices don't swing back to what they *were*, I will pass on the next Diesel Outback. It's only $1.89 for Regular Unleaded here in NJ (Costco Gasoline), but it's still around $3.00 - maybe more - for Diesel fuel in my local area. The Legacy now gets about 30 mpg with all the combined hwy/city I do, I'd need to get 45 mpg to just "break even". It's quite the conundrum - it's like the Hybrid Cars. Do you want to pay an extra 10,000 now and save 12,500 in gasoline over the next 10 years, or do you want to pay 10,000 less for a car, and pay a little bit more for gas over the next decade? Tough call indeed.
Only second-rate countries...

...don't have an auto industry of their own. Shoot even FRANCE has it's own auto industry and own Nissan to boot! Don't give me the UK as an example. They are a huge has-been nation compared to what they once were. "The sun never sets on British soil!" Feh! Looks like "Great" Britain has been experiencing a solar eclipse for almost 40 years. Yeah, we'll go into a deep depression if the Big Three collapse and we'll come out of it in about 5-10 years. Of course, will any of us be here when it ends? I so, won't we be living a much diminished lifestyle? Import lovers should really fear a collapse of the Big Three if they love their cars so much. Let me give you this scenario. "Hey, Bill! How's your new 2016 Toyota Camry? I love it, Joe, but I can't seem to keep a decent paint job on it. Every morning I wake up to see some joker keyed it or spraypainted profanity on it! Yeah, I'm having trouble with my 2014 Honda Accord. I just can't keep tires on it because some idiots keep slashing the sidewalls. Hey, there's Al! Al, we've been talking cars. How's your 2015 Nissan Altima? Fine, except I can't seem to keep glass in it with all these unemployed auto workers roaming the streets. Just yesterday, I was stopped at a light and these two guys in tattered clothes threw a cinderblock through my windshield. Geeze, why doesn't somebody call the cops? What cops? The city laid off half the force 'cause there's no tax funds for them. I hear there's going to be more lay-offs..."

Your mileage record is similar to mine. I'm at 26.6 mpg overall on a '07 CR-V, with a hwy-city mix of about 60-40%. Hwy mileage can be improved easily. Slow down. 65 mph gets you better mileage than 75, and 55 mph is even better. Most of us, though, aren't going to poke along at 55 mph and some think 75 on the open road is too slow. The trade off is time versus money.
Hating a car I would other wise love! Most horrible noise!

I was in total lust with my car when I got it, until the break sqeak started!! 2008 HHR w/under 4000 miles on it. When I slow to stop, rather than "hard stop" my brakes squeak so bad that I cringe. It's embarassing and ear peircing. I've taken it in and was told it's the ceramic brake pad surface becoming slick because of how I slow to stop. Well I live in downtown Phoenix, AZ and drive mostly city streets. There's alot of slowing to stop. They suggested that when I'm in a parking lot, do a bunch of hard stopping to roughen up the pad. This hasn't worked. I'm so annoyed. I've called and emailed GM. This is supposed to be a "lifetime" brake pad according the the service guys. Frankly I'd rather pay money for new pads every few years to not be constantly embarrassed and sounding like my brakes need replacing.

Are you saying the economy will recover and gas will be at $4.50 by summer? Well if the economy starts to recover and gas shoots up to $4.50 again it will stiffel any recovery. But I am pretty sure the economy will not recover by then, if it does it will be sluggish. People will have to think about picking up something that will tow because you will need a trailer to haul the money it will take to get out of the grocery store. No while it would make price adjustments inevitable we won't see any hyper inflation.

Unfortunately around here it is not uncommon to see some idiot floor it and make a left turn infront of oncoming traffic the second the light turns green. For my guy of the day, I am at a light in the left lane, the right lane ends about 100 feet after the intersection. The car in the right land keeps inching out further and further until he is almost completely in the intersection when the light turns green. Ok so the light turns green and I start to go but not to fast (RPM's never went above 3K) and the guy who wanted to get ahead of me just sits there. :confuse:
