Renault 12 or Pinto Wagon? YOU Make The Call!
by gmginsfo on Sun Nov 05 16:25:06 PST 2006
Just because it came first doesn't mean the Renault wins this contest. No, let's consider its losing its water pump on my way home after getting discharged from the Navy, less than a week after I bought it in Philly. Then there was the time I leaned back to reach into my pocket to fish out some change for a toll - and the seat frame snapped. But the final blow came on a lonely Midwest highway in November, when the cooling system failed once and for all and the engine froze, leaving me to do the same until a tow truck came and mercifully relieved me of this burden once and for all. But not until my friends had nicknamed it "Le Petit Piece de la Merd." Fast forward from 11-75 to 11-81, and from Illinois to L.A. I thought I was clever, because I didn't buy the Corolla some Hollywood scammer jump-started as I rolled up to his house and saw him running away, jumper cables trailing behind him. Instead, I drove over to Silverlake and sprung for a battleship gray Pinto wagon that smoked and wouldn't downshift when I floored it. Reason? it had a broken cylinder shaft, as the young mechanic who took it off my hands for less than half of what I paid for it kindly informed me after he repaired it to where, in his words, "it ran like a sewing machine." Where was my thimble when I needed it? :confuse: Now, 25+ years later, after living much of that time in SFrancisco without owning a car - the one remaining good thing about that city-gone-crazy - I'm the happy owner of a 2003 Forester, which has treated me well since I bought it 3 1/2 years ago. :shades:
Looking for mechanic in Hollywood, CA to service 89 560 SL.
by la8956sl on Sun Apr 02 09:57:58 PDT 2006
I have an `89 560 SL with ~130,000 miles on it. I've been to all the dealers in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica area, and find the service to be atrocious and ridiculously expensive. For a 17 year old car, my SL is in pretty good shape, but I need a major service (brakes, front tie rods/bushing, engine compression check, etc.)and I'm looking for a mechanic I can establish a relationship with in the Hollywood/Silverlake area of L.A. who works on classic Mercedes'. Any suggestions?

Does BMW ever give notice of the mid-year change? What is the likelihood that they will tell us before the change? What if the Feb/03 3 series will offer a 6 speed--will we have anyway of knowing it up front? Have they done this in the past? Seivwrig: Enjoy the trip. I would probably go with Countryplace over Shadow Creek Ranch, but drop katkison or sheilasmithermanmd a line. They both live in Countryplace. I used to live in Silverlake until about 4 weeks ago and moved into town. I have been keeping my eyes open for your car. Have you put any distinguishing mark on it yet? I dropped one of those chrome Longhorns onto the back of my car and it is a little crooked and a little tacky, but I did it in case I run into one of those who actually read this board--if you see me, honk cause I love to see other people getting therapy in the bimmer. Speaking of therapy: I get to drive to San Antonio tomorrow and am looking forward to some fun with my new V1 on the road. It has been terrific for the few little jots around town the past few weeks, but I look forward to seeing how well it works out on the open road. It is not much help against the new HPD Laser weapon which I have now seen on various occasions on the south loop and 288. If you pay attention when you drive, you can almost always slow down a good bit before one of those guys gets a read on you though.

Sorry to hear about the water mess. I hate dealing with that stuff-the workers never show up, the job is never fixed right the first time, they track mud all over the house--it is terrible. We had our fair share of torture a couple of months into our new home in Silverlake. Shower pan was installed wrong, fixed (wrong), and then re-re-installed. Torture. FWIW: My new posh (kidding) crib in town has a roof leak which the previous owner denied vehemently. I think I have it figured out though now and have only spent about $3.50 fixing it--the next big rain will tell all. FWIW 2: They installed hardwoods into the new place last week and they looked terrible--they ripped them out this week and started over--tar is all over the house--TORTURE. The real question is: Should I go ahead and get the V1? I am dying to watch the bogey counter and see the arrows pointing in the direction of the bogey. It looks like great fun and the curiosity is killing me. Of course my new home is 2.0 miles from work so it will sit idle most of the time, but I think I still like having it as I drive around the neighborhood--It is just fun to know a cop is there around a corner or over a hill...
South Houston Crowd:

seiv: I agree with KK about Shadow creek ranch. I think the developer has some wierd ideas and the school issue is very significant until it is resolved (I cannot imagine they will ship those kids to Alvin forever). If I were buying down 288 I would move into Lakes at Countryplace. It is one of the closest developments to town and has the best 288 access. We live in Silverlake and while I like it, I think over the next few years it may become to busy (it is possible to spend 6-10 minutes before even getting to 288 after you leave your house). The Countryplace area allows easy access to all of the shopping that will soon dominate the 518 exit, but since it is more proximate to Houston you will save yourself future traffic headaches. I have a cheap radar detector that does the job. It is a Uniden Laser blah blah blah. It is about 5-6 years old and has never failed to give me adequate warning around town. I don't like to drive too fast, but I sorta feel like 79mph is a reasonable speed and that everyone should drive it to protest the ridiculous limits. Most of the time you get enough visual warning to slow down, but having the detector is a little fun and gives you a few seconds more. Don't count on going a 95-120mph and expect it to save you (at least as far as my cheap one is concerned) because you may not have enough warning to slow down fast enough, but for gentle excesses the cheap detector is fun and relatively reliable. FWIW: I have had 3 tickets in my 15 years of driving: 16yrs, 18yrs, and one at 29yrs of age last year. My last one was bogus but I knew I deserved one for all the other times I was speeding and so I didn't quibble about it. I just took DD and got a 10% savings off my insurance. (I was not driving my bimmer at the time).
