Re: CR 0-60 Times [andys120]

That's the thing, though. There are essentially no standards at all with the manufacturer's claims. There ARE no standards for testing, so it is very much like db claims for fans. They all test vastly different than what the marketing departments claim. If the guys at Fifth Gear couldn't come remotely close to the listed times(on an actual drag strip/flat test track), you have to wonder how much of it is lying or someone doing really brutal things to that car. Even the Ariel Atom was a full second slower than the published time no matter how hard they flogged it. They asked the manufacturer about it on the show and they were adamant that it would do the listed time. The host's face was obviously showing that he wasn't buying it. My guess is that most manufacturers do their tests on a dyno. This of course would largely negate road friction, initial time to hook up/get traction, and wind resistance. They also tend to make 2nd gear silly tall to not require a shift to 3rd before 60-65mph to get better bragging rights. But then again, seriously - have you ever kept a car in 2nd gear with an automatic until it hit the rev limiter? If it's a Ford or GM, it'll sound like the thing is about to grenade on you. No sane person would do it, which is why these figures are not even close to being realistic.

To me it looks like the 'Ring record war (started by GT-R) is the new HP war. Does anyone remember who started the HP war? The nice thing about a lap time war as opposed to a horsepower war is that it involves the design and engineering of the entire car, not just the engine. Clumsy muscle cars like the CL65 have no chance. My guess is that one of the 1000hp per ton road racers like the Caparo T1 (if it can actually survive a whole lap) or the Ariel Atom 500 V8 will be able to break the seven second barrier, and the old guard like Ferrari and Porsche will never catch them.

If you really want best performance for your buck, just tune an EVO. Actually, the car with the best performance per dollar is the Ariel Atom. It smoked the Z06 (as well as the Carrera GT and Murcielago LP640) on the TG test track, and was only a half second slower than the Enzo. The fastest EVO they've done to date, the old FQ-400, only managed 23rd place. The new V8 Atom would probably be able to take down the Ascari and K-segg, but I'm pretty sure its rather pricey.

Been away for a week and a bit, up in northern England. So I missed your last two e-bay selections. Liked the Suburban - a real truck The Peugeot estate is popular everywhere as a real workhorse - they go for ever - pretty much indestructible - just look on the news - if it is somewhere in Africa with no roads, the locals will be buzzing round in these, 404/504/505, it doesn't matter which. As for the Loewy designed barge - well it is unique, but sometimes that is a good thing. And from your previous selection, the one that caught my eye was the BSA - great little cars, with a real pedigree. BSA stood for Birmingham Small Arms - they were suppliers of rifles and other guns to the British Army - from about 1700 (muskets) - and they made cars from before WW1 to the outbreak of WW2 in 1939. ( They also dabbled with micro-cars in the 50's, like most motor-cycle manufacturers) They owned Daimler and Lanchester from about 1910, but they are of course better known as motor-cycle manufacturers, at one time they owned Triumph and Ariel motor-cycles, and they were also one of the largest suppliers of (pedal) bicycles in the UK. - my first new bike was a BSA when I was a kid...
Re: who are they going to trash in the US [nwng]

Since there are no UK auto manufacturers anymore so basically they can trash everybody except the highend cars: R8, lambo, porsche.... everything else is close to rubbish and that's the part I like the most. Can you imagine the hate mail the US version gets if a cobalt is declared "rubbish"? Or what if the Z06 was trumped on the track by those rice burners that costs half the price? Well, we Brits may not own the companies but we do build Rolls Royce, Bentley, Aston Martin, Bristol, Jaguar, Land Rover, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Mercedes-McLaren, Morgan, Ariel .......... and some others, plus most of your major-series race engines, IIRC. Corvette vs "Rice Burners" ? No sign of bias there then. If you can't take the criticism; don't watch.
