I live in NOVA and went out looking for a Beemer on a whim. Got one 2004, 30K miles, certified pre-owned (CPO) in practically show room condition. It came with CO2 control, central armrest, smoker's package (though I don't smoke neither did the previous owner), CD Player, Premium Package, BMW assit, cd changer, sreptronic auto trnas, rain sensor and auto hlight, black soft top, hi-fi stereo, power front seats, auto air. Edmunds priced it at about 29K and change for trade in 31K private sale and 34K dealer retail (because it was CPO). The MSRP was $36,900; when I got to it, it was at 33,500; I offered $30,500. The salesman asked me to offer a better price. I told him that was as high as I would go. They took it. I think I got a good deal do you all agree? efmoura@gmail.com

I bought my X3 in the Washington DC area 10 days ago. They indicated that BMW finance had just increased the residual to 65% for 3yr/45K, but the money factor was .0017 rather than .00125. Just for comparison, the residual was 68% for 3yr/30K, and (I think) 67% for 3yr/36K. Good luck with your ride! I'm really enjoying mine.

Thanks to all for the feedback. It really helps to get impressions from people who've had a chance to drive both. I was leaning toward the 6 spd and your feedback has confirmed that for me it's a good choice. Happy driving.
6 speed manual vs 5 speed steptronic

I'm getting ready to order a 2006 X3 3.0 and am looking for input regarding performance differences between the manual and automatic transmissions. I live in the DC area, and the dealers here only have the 5-speed autos in stock so that's all I've been able to test drive. Both dealers I have visited indicated the 6 speed manual is very rarely sold here - one said he's sold one in the last 6 months, the other said 2 or 3 in the last two years and said I was "way out to the right" (I suppose he meant right field) to be considering it. With the heavy stop and go traffic here, the auto would clearly be more convenient for commuting. On the other hand, one of the main reasons I'm buying a BMW is for the performance and driving fun, so I'm trying to weigh the two issues in making a decision. I drove a Saab 900 Turbo with a 5-speed manual transmission for about 11 years and don't remember being particularly bothered by it in traffic, but I've been driving an automatic for about the last 10 years. I'd appreciate input from anyone who's driven both, or just general level of satisfaction from folks driving either one. Thanks

I am getting '04 with 10K miles --program car-- fully loaded, 3rd seat, etc for 37999 down from 38600; I looking at the prices being paid new and it seems like the previously owned route might just be the way to get these cars for a much better price. The exact same car 05, European delivery, 42K... I can take a trip to Europe for less than 4K with the traveling deals from the east coast now. Good luck to all.

Thanks for the welcome! I work in McLean and live in Oakton, so my commute isn't that great. I just picked it up last weekend at Rosenthal Jaguar in Tysons. The car was first put into service in 10/96, so I just missed the select warranty coverage. I put a 5-year/100,000mi coverage on it. I would appreciate the pointer to a reputable mechanic. I'll probably let Rosenthal do the 30,000 mile service on it in a month or so when it's due. Since I'm not sure if it was checked out before it was sold being out of the warranty period. Feels okay though...
