FWD MPG vs AWD MPG
by ppborceb on Thu Oct 23 16:07:27 PDT 2008
I would like to have those of you who are nice enough to share your real-life mpg experiences with us, please indicated whether your vehicle is FWD or AWD, because AWD is a heavier vehicle and this could be the reason for the swing in mileage, not just city vs highway or a combination of city & highway. This would be very helpfull information in your reports going forward.
Tire Pressure & Snow Tires
by ppborceb on Thu Oct 23 15:22:25 PDT 2008
TirePressure: I'm from the 'old school', and here is my opinion for what it's worth. Years ago an old mechanic where my father brought his car for maintenance, said a 'rule of thumb' is tire pressure should be double the rim size. Therefore, my Limited with 18" wheels has 36 lbs even though the door label indicates 30 lbs. I have never had any problems in 50 years of driving using Charlie's 'rule'. SnowTires: I lived in western MA and used to put 4 snow tires on my cars and never had a problem when I tried to stop or turn a corner. I have seen cars continue straight ahead when the driver applied the brakes and tried to take a corner. Enough said! I am getting a package deal of 4 STUDDED snow tires and wheels for my Limited, but I am getting size P245/65R17. Take it from an old guy who has never been stuck or out of control in the snowy Berkshires. So, here you are with my unsolicited opinion, and yes, I know the 17" wheels are OK because the GLS has them, and the 18" wheels are just an upgrade for the SE and Limited.

I think you nailed it right on when you said that those sitting up high in the SUV's and pick-em-up trucks get a "false sense of confidence". It's part of the American birthright to sit up high in our vehicles and drive like we own the road...apparently. steve, yeah, I don't always know the different districts in Seattle. But, there's a Dick's Drive-In on Holman Road. That might be in the Wallingford district of Seattle. I went to that one on Holman Road a lot. Also, there's a Dick's on Lake City Way in NE Seattle. There's one on Capitol Hill, just east of downtown Seattle. There's two more that I know of. One's in the University(of Washington)District and the other one is about a block from Key Arena, next to the Seattle Center, where the 1962 World's Fair was. That one is known as the Queen Anne Hill Dick's. Man, I could always count on a delicious Dick's Deluxe burger or a Dick's Special. The Special has no cheese but it has a delicious mixture of lettuce, onions and sauce that makes for a wonderful eating experience. One thing that would've taken me off my commute if I had commuted from the city of Seattle from a job to up north, where I always lived when living in that area, would be Dick's Drive-In restaurants. Forget about a $50 meal in the revolving Space Needle restaurant, when you can eat a delicious Dick's hamburger and get a greasy, potato skin-left-on the fries order of fries and a Coke or chocolate milkshake, man. I'm starting to get hungry for lunch as I type this! Another thing that frustrated me about living in the Seattle area. Dick's Drive-In decided to stay only in the Seattle area. They didn't put one up north in Edmonds, Lynnwood or Everett! Wherever they locate they'll do well, but the creators of the restaurant wanted to keep it in Seattle. Oh well.

Dick's Drive-In did make a mean deluxe and special hamburger and the fries were good. That's in Wallingford? I have an in-law a few blocks from it and have driven by it a dozen times in past years. Guess I'll have to pull in one of these days. The Boeing strike continues so perhaps the commute has eased a bit in the last couple of weeks.

$3.84 at BJ's (haha) membership warehouse in Wallingford, CT as of last Friday (8/1/08). Price is for members only. This is where I get my gas exclusively. I don't pass by on a regular basis so I don't have an updated price.
Mercury vs Ford
by ppborceb on Tue Jul 08 15:39:09 PDT 2008
Everyone knows that Mercury is nothing but a copycat Ford for the Geezers with money that wouldn't be caught dead in a Ford. The Grand Marquis is nothing more than a Crown Victoria, but priced higher. Dump the Mercury and go back to the original company that Henry put America on wheels!
