Re: Porsche questions [paisan]

paisan Mike, what conditions do you look for when you sign up for a track day? Cold and rainy or nice and sunny. We get our share of rain here in Northern Calif., as a matter of fact had a couple sessions yesterday in the wet at Sears Point raceway, Sonoma. And yes, the 4wd cars did wonderful things while they had the wet to play in, but when the track went nice again at lunch time it was another story. paisan: "Maybe on the west coast where it's sunny and dry all the time and the tracks are perfectly smooth with no gravel or imperfections, a vette would win but in the real world or in a place where there are environmental variables, a more balanced car would be my preference." Are you a host or a guy looking to stir up comment? I doubt Sears Point does much more than Watkins Glen to try and make the track nice for the two real races the Stock Car boys put on each year. And if you want gravel, try Reno-Fernley and Spring Mt. Raceway since both are set in Nevada. Most folks looking to run on a road course aren't looking for a Rally circuit, you may enjoy something different. As for balance, yesterday was a good view of wet and dry conditions at Sears Point. In the third session, advanced, I went out late and pulled up to the starter for a black flag to get a Miata off track. Got to pull out behind another Miata and we were both taking it easy as about 2/3 of the track was still pretty wet. As we got back to the starter there was another black flag. Yellows at each station up to turn 7 where she was waving it lazily, we weren't going too fast. Did the sweep and into the 8 esses and off the outside of 8a, 1/2 an esse before Jr. had his fire there sits a silver 911 with the driver and safety crew surveying the scraped off rear facia about 50 ft. off track where he had rear swiped the tire barrier. Think he might have lifted? The Vette C5 and C6's are about 50/50 or as close as you can get when corner weighting. Can you say that about the Porsches? Balanced? I do agree that they can be driven fast, but novices better take some time getting to that point or they are going to find out about balance. Randy Oh BTW, if the little plastic card from NASA and my work with Thunderhill Street School makes me certified, then I guess I could say the same. Mostly I think I sit in the right seat trying to keep folks out of walls, which is amazingly easy if you can teach them the line. Oh, and not to lift!
Thanks for the pic's and oh the memories ...

Got my MGB, Orange with OD, from the depot west of London in May 1972 after discharge from the USAF. Ordered it from a catalog of cars for pickup in Europe and put 10,000 miles on it in just over 3 months before shipping it back to the SF Bay Area. Drove it until 1984, one trip to Colorado, many trips to LA and Vegas and daily commuter after getting out of Grad School in '75. Only two issues I ever had with the electrics was that the odometer quit at about 20k miles and I never fixed it, knew about what speed from the tach. Then this wire would fall off under the car below the driver seat and I kept a tarp behind the seat, coast to the side of the road, drop the tarp, lay down and reach under to give it a squeeze and slide it back on the connector, never even knew what it was. Best car I owned up to my current Vette. Randy

Just saw one in a Radical ...

The guy who owns Radical West, the distributor for Radicals out here was driving one at Thunderhill yesterday. It was just about the fastest thing on the track but not quite. They did an exhibition race after lunch and had a split grid for the, I think, 8 Radicals in front and then ten or more more common vehicles that started about 200 yards back. The Porsche caught and passed each of the Radicals in turn and picked off John Morris in the V8 Hayabusa twin on the last of a ten lap race, 30 miles. Impressive driving, but I don't know the specs on the 911 except it had a huge double wing on the rear. Fun to watch. They were both very fast cars. BTW, the Radical is the right hand picture on the Powertec header of the four vehicles shown. Funny thing about the little V8, in the pits it has a supurb sound, deep and rumbles, but going by on the straight it just screams. Also FWIW, an IMSA Mustang with about 700hp passed most of the Radicals as well, and it sounds great anywhere.
Not just you ...

Try either The One Lap or here in the west the Open Track Challenge: http://www.opentrackchallenge.com/2005tour.htm http://www.onelapofamerica.com/ Since some frown on Cannonball runs :surprise: these are the ones I've come across and followed for the last two years. Haven't yet gotten to see either but if I could find the right support I'd consider the OTC in the future. C&D Mag had a good write up of last years One Lap and there was plenty of fixing going on along the way to suit any purist. Lots of people pitching in to fix other cars to keep them in the mix. Not just for Sports cars but that's what does the best! :D In 2003 two Corvettes finished at the top! :) Randy

I have to agree about the west coast dealers not being up to speed on the vette, partly due to low volume which they perpetuate by their approach. Buying off the internet is the best approach and either pick up and make it a vacation, done that twice, pick up at the factory or take courtesy delivery at say a Caddy dealer and get your pampering. Good research will save a lot, talking to sales people will waste a lot of time, JOMO.
