Re: rear differential in automatic Forester [xwesx]

Purchase date was Oct 01 so that five year (aka end of warranty regardless of mileage) was Oct 06. For the record, never towed anything, never climbed anything, just standard basic driving on paved roads... but the transmission still reached the brink of failure.

I too have been satisfied with my Forester, but needing transmission or differential work at such low mileages also has me wondering if I should trust buying another one if Subaru considers this normal wear(?). The Subaru Dealer is replacing my deteriorated transmission with a remanufactured one. Subaru headquarters negotiated to covering 1/2; while truly appreciated, means my cost is over $1870. How is it that a Forester properly maintained per their specs at one of their dealerships can need a automatic transmission replaced at 46,000 miles? Is it really just several of us with "bad luck"?

while driving across Vermont: 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix, sitting in a weed-filled lot on the outskirts of Brattleboro. Badly faded dark blue paint, these were favorites of mine and it was sad to see it in this condition but I didn't notice any obvious rust. 1962-63 Falcon Convertible, very nice, top down, leading a stack of cars east of Bennington, couldn't get close enough to tell if it was a Futura 6 or Sprint V8 but it definitely had the extra chrome of a higher end version.

What happened to the place in Rockport? I would have gobbled that one right up! It looked really nice (from the pics, I didn't go in person)--& was $80K more, more "rural" (not in-town), & had a septic system which I see as just a huge expensive problem sooner or later. Also--I spent so much time house-hunting in parts of Maine, Portsmouth NH, Brattleboro VT, & Newburyport (just to name a few), & really learning those areas well, that I finally just didn't have the willpower to start looking in different coastal areas like Rockport, Gloucester, Marblehead (MA), & not just look at properties, but really learn all the diff. neighborhoods, etc. I think others looking to re-locate for "retirement" may go thru some of this. just in the first week of getting mortgage, appraisal, inspection, etc. etc. (all of which is driving me nuts on certain days). Today, it's just the same. Every single thing is like pulling teeth, & the deadlines for all that are in a week or so--& I'm supposed to sign the P&S & put down $20K before I may find out if I have a mortgage committment (?), the way it's going. :( I wish I could go back to doing something sensible, like obsessing over whether to buy a new Mini, or a new 3-Series (wagon?). But thanks to all for the words of encouragement......!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Been a lurker for awhile, figured i should finally show my head! I'm in the NE, and possibly moving farther up into VT. Read somewhere that Stacy Subaru in Brattleboro is good, although my folks live in VA, so i guess i could also go to Fitz - would be a great way to get through the first 1k miles quickly!! :-) Oliver

wouldn't want a place right in Burlington but something within 20 minutes of it The "Five Spice" in Burlington is a great Asian restaurant. And visiting Shelburne Farms on a sunny day is fantastic. Of course if you went further out from Burlington you could get 10-20 acres if you really wanted. I looked at some houses in Brattleboro a few months ago. Brattleboro gets great reviews, but for me, I didn't really "get it". If you've never seen Woodstock VT, would be well worth a trip or detour. One of the most beautiful towns on the planet, IMO.
