Before I would bailout UAW members and their companies, how about the other Americans out of work. Funny how only Auto employment counts. Well, join the club because one way or the other, the Big 3 are history. Pay now or later but forget what you see today. UAW will DIE as an entity. Considering this news, who the heck is going to buy a car from a failing THREE? U.S. jobless claims reach 7-year high Last Updated: Thursday, November 13, 2008 | 1:57 PM ET Comments6Recommend6 CBC News U.S. initial jobless claims have hit their highest since the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to figures released Thursday. The U.S. Department of Labour said the number of Americans who asked for unemployment benefits spiked at 516,000 for the week ended Nov. 4. That level represented a jump of seven per cent, or 32,000, compared with a week earlier. The jobless claims figures also was the highest since the last week of September 2001. Worse still, economists had expected the number to remain roughly stable at 484,000. The jobless claims figures indicate a U.S. economy with its prospects heading south, experts said. "This report provides little reason for optimism about any easing in the pace of jobs declines from the 240,000 drop in October and the risk of an even more pronounced drop," said RBC Economics assistant chief economist Paul Ferley in a commentary Thursday. As a four-week average, 491,000 Americans asked for employment benefits in the most recent reading, up 13,000 from the 477,000 one week earlier. Examining these figures as a monthly average reduces the economic effect of a single event, such as a hurricane, on employment. Another measure of the weakening U.S. jobs situation — the number of workers who receive employment benefits on a continued basis — stayed at a five-year peak. For the past three weeks, U.S. continuing jobless claims averaged 3.7 million, the highest figures since June 2003. Regards, OW

I wouldn't bet the farm with taxpayer's money to bail them out either. There's a whole heck of a lot of angry folks that are in worse shape that might have something to say about bailing out the UAW jobs! I, too have a VW Convertible and the top broke as well. It started that it was very difficult to lock the handle--almost impossible. I fotunately had a warrant on my NEWLY purchased 2004 VW Beetle. I have had many problems with this vehicle --the first two weeks--the thermostat failed...the windows wouldn't align..that is when I realized that the top may be out of alignment..they replaced the top--the receipt said 3200.00. Now the little arm that lift the flaps up and down broke...which finally got the flap caught in the way of the top and broke off--ugh. How frustrating--eventhough I have warranty coverage ..it is so inconvenient to find time to take it to the dealership--to get repairs done. Ever since the top was replaced the windows act strange..the guy at VW Serivce said ,"Oh , I jsut have to reset the windows.." He rolled the windows down..held the button down and then rolled them back up. I was waiting for him to say,m "There ya go little lady!" I drove away becasue there was a Category 3 Hurricane coming that day--so I crossed my fingers. That was a month ago and now the windows have a mind of their own---jsut when the driver's side gets up to the top--it rolls back down--argh! I get so angry... This car is cute and I have been wanting one since their release in 1996...but..ummm..my 1987 Honda Accord is more reliable! With it 's 217, 000 mileage. :confuse:

I just pulled up the CA site and it gave a maximum of $450 as of 2005. Not sure how long it goes for. I know you can get extensions. I only collected Unemployment one time in 1977 when I quit and went to try farming. I think it was 26 weeks and an extension. It was not very much money even back then. I do agree that some of the things offered by government programs seem nice to fall back on. Every time you give government a place in your life you give up something in return. It is a form of enslavement. It was never more brought to the forefront than during hurricane Katrina. Those people were totally lost without government intervention. They had lost all motivation to survive on their own.

I HAVE A 2002 GMC SIERRA EXTENDED CAB SPORTS SIDE P/U. IT HAS THE 5.3 LITER V/8 AND I SPECIAL ORDERED THIS TRUCK AND HAD A SPECIAL UPGRADED SUSPENSION UNDER IT FOR TOWING. I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE BACK PASSENGERS FLOOR GETTING WET AFTER RAINS. I HAVE BEEN IN THE BACK SEAT AND WENT THROUGH ONE OF THEM TOUCHLESS CAR WASHES AND I CANNOT FIND ANY LEAKS OR SIGNS OF LEAKS, BUT IT DOES LEAK AND GET THE PASSENGER FLOOR CARPET WET WHEN RAINING. THE DEALER SAID THE SAME THING, THEY COULD NOT FIND THE LEAK, AND SAID I MUST HAVE LEFT THE WINDOWS DOWN A LITTLE. I SAID I DON'T LEAVE MY WINDOWS OPEN EVERY TIME IT RAINS. THERE IS SOME KIND OF DEFECT IN THE GMC SIERRA'S FROM 2002 THRU 2007. THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO ADMIT IT DUE TO THE RECALL THEY WOULD HAVE TO DO ON 6 OR 7 YEARS OF TRUCKS. I'M SURE THE SILVERADO'S HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, BECAUSE THEY'RE THE SAME TRUCK WITH DIFFERENT INTERIORS AND SOME COSMETIC DIFFERENCES OUTSIDE, BUT THEY HAVE THE EXACT FRAMES AND BODY'S.
How about this?

Instead of a direct bailout of the Big 3, Congress will pass a bill authorizing FEMA to purchase (at MSRP of course) and stockpile Big3 vehicles, for the victims of disaster. If 20K vehicles are flooded in the next hurricane, FEMA provides new cars to the owners. An earthquake in CA, no problem - all the cars will be replaced from FEMA stockpiles (maybe call it the FEMA Strategic Reserve?) They could also use some of the large SUV's as housing, and the PU's could have a camping shell put on them. So no loan or bailout would be needed. ;)
