Running a straight S2000 here in AZ. No special tricks except for an engine treatment additive and fuel supplement. My log book for 17,000 miles indicates an average of 24 MPG and yet on two trips to the mountains recently I got 40 and 39 mpg. Sounds crazy but its true. Went up the hill to Payson at 90 mph, so I was not pussy footing. On the second trip, coming back I documented 32 mpg, but only because I was stuck behind a Swift Tractor Trailer for 25 minutes while I turned 2500 rpm at 25 mph. Reason for the great mileage: negative friction.
2003 cavalier with loss of coolant
by bobsu on Sat May 03 05:04:30 PDT 2008
I returned home after a 200 mile trip and had to add a half gallon of coolant. My mechanic says that this is caused by a faulty thermostat. How is a faulty thermostat a cause of this coolant loss? Driving around town does not cause coolant loss.

I took my AT up the 87 to Payson. You won't be at the head of the pack. I had to wait until a 8-10 car cap before I felt comfortable merging left to get around the trucks. Like you, I just didn't feel comfortable consistenly running over 4k rpms.

We have an 05 auto wagon with 12,000 miles on it. We get 21-22 mpg around town, and 27-29 mpg highway. Ours has the 6 speed transmission. We traded in a Sienna van for it, and are very happy.

I replied to a reply to your original (this) message, but got no response. Here's what I said: I'm seriously considering going with an ED 3 series next fall, and Chapman (oh, wait, it used to be Linda Brock) BMW is my most convenient store. When I drop in there to do my initial negotiation, one of the questions will involve how long the person I'm talking with has been working at the store. Anyone want to bet that it'll be over a year? Five? And, to Max, thanks for your response. When the time comes, I'd appreciate any introductions you are willing to provide. And thanks again for all the helpful input on the other boards. That said, does the Chapman thing still apply? I bought an Eagle Vision from Chapman in Payson in '96, so have absolutely no hearburn with their brand, but they do seem to be absorbing other stores. Any help is appreciated. However, continuity and/or loyalty is a pretty rare commodity in the Phx market, from what I've seen. I'm certainly prepared to be corrected. Thanks.
Navigation system sucks!
by krim on Wed Aug 09 11:56:57 PDT 2006
I can't speak for the eastern states, but here in the western states the Navigation system is totally useless. I plugged in Payson, AZ, to Telluride, CO, and got two paths. The quickest was totally wrong! 150 miles out of my way. Shortest was only 100 miles out of my way. So I put in a way point using what I knew was the shortest AND fastest way. Aha. That's better, I thought. Wrong! It had me turning into vacant areas where no road has ever been - and 20 miles from civilization. Into mountain sides. Etc. 80% of the time it was correct. Wonderful. The other 20% created sheer disaster. Should I trust it? No way! Which makes it worthless. So I consulted with another owner. She was trying to get from Payson, AZ, to Mesa, AZ. The Nav system tried to take her into a mountain! Again, no road was ever there. OK. So maybe I needed an update (mine was 1.1). 2 hours of phone time later I got a real answer (this was NOT easy). Useless, but real. It seems in order to get the new upgraded DVD I need to join a subscription service. The problem is, the subscription service doesn't exist yet (August 9, 2007). The new DVD does, but it is not available without the subscription service - which doesn't exist yet! A $2,000 option which is basically useless. Hey, the car has been out for 8 months. Ok, after three more calls to the dealership they are aware of the problem. They can't solve it, of course. I would suggest a massive letter writing campaign to Chevrolet - and maybe a magazine or two. GMC picked the wrong people for their Navigation System. By the way, the currently available version 4.1 is for the Tahoe 2006, a whole different system. Yikes. How big a screw up is this!
