You Sound Like A GREAT Dealer, Jeff
by ricwhite on Thu Jul 03 10:14:45 PDT 2008
Jeff, I appreciate the great information you offer. You sound like a great dealership to work with. You mentioned that dealerships have the “option” to implement advertised lease deals, etc. and that it shouldn’t be hard to find one that will. However, I found it very difficult and time consuming here in Utah. Let me be very specific so people can avoid my awful experience and let me also say, that I DID find a wonderful Hyundai dealership that was VERY responsive and GREAT to work with. But first my horror experiences. 1) Westland Hyundai in Ogden, Utah. AVOID. After initially telling me they certainly will give me the lease deal, they didn’t. They actually ADDED on the $1000 rebate to the cap cost and modified numbers at the end to bring an advertised lease of $299 up to about $550 per month. They told me that no dealership could do that lease deal because they would lose money. I knew that wasn’t true because I read LOTS of personal accounts of the lease deal right here on these forums. I even had printouts from specific experiences. When I told them and showed them that, they told me that all of them were lying and they asked me to leave and try elsewhere. They guaranteed I wouldn’t find the Azera for under $500 on the 27 month lease. 2) Riverton Hyundai – Riverton, Utah. AVOID. They are about 45 minutes away. I called them and talked directly to the person in charge of leases. I brought up the exact lease deal as specified in on the Hyundai site - $299/month. He said it would be no problem. I made an appointment to meet the next day. I drove to the address in the phone book which led me to a huge open field. I had to call them again to get the CORRECT address (and they had NO IDEA their address was incorrect in the phone book so I pointed it out in the phone book on the counter). After talking and presenting the lease terms from my printouts, they left me for an unusually long time. When they came back, they told me that they couldn’t get the lease software to work. They said the lease manager was gone. (That’s the one I MADE THE APPOINTMENT WITH). They said they would have him call me. I drove back home. He called me THREE DAYS LATER and I was told the best lease on the Azera was around $390 a month. 3) Ken Garff Hyundai – Salt Lake City, Utah . AVOID. Called and made an appointment. Drove there. Within minutes of talking to them I knew something was wrong. I was negotiating the cap cost, but their numbers were off. The invoice pricing on the Azera (which they showed me in print-out) was about $800 higher than all of the literature, online auto sites, and all of the other Hyundai dealerships I visited. I told them was the correct invoice and retail pricing was and showed them in several papers that I brought. They told me they were all wrong. I asked about the other dealerships and they told me they were lying. Then it got worse from there. They had weird added fees. For example, they had a “Dealer Name Fee” of $350. When I asked them what that was, I was told it was a mandatory fee for the “privilege” of posting “Ken Garff” on the building and vehicles. It was at this point, that I knew this was a lost cause and I left. 4) Murdock Hyundai – Orem, Utah. EXCELLENT. Usually I stop after three strikes, but I really wanted to lease an Azera. So, I called Murdock Hyundai and made an appointment. It was a 1.5 hour drive. When I mentioned the lease deal, I was told “absolutely.” I didn’t even have to negotiate. $299 a month, plus taxes. They also had the color I wanted. Done within an hour. Now THAT’’S how it’s done. Perfect. Just out of spite, I emailed Westland Hyundai in Ogden and reminded the sales manager that he guaranteed I couldn’t find an Azera lease for under $500. I told him I just lease it for $299 plus tax at Murdock Hyundai in Orem, Utah. I never got a response, obviously. Idiots. At least I know where to go for my Hyundai vehicles, but as you can see, it was NOT “easy” to find one. That’s why I was concerned about selling the Genesis at regular Hyundai dealerships. I can’t even imagine getting a Genesis at any of those dealerships that I had awful experiences with trying to lease an Azera. And I know they haven’t changed much because I get my “service” at Westland Hyundai in Ogden where I had the awful experience. (At least their service department is good). But the last time I was in for service, I waited in the new car lobby. The secretary was on the phone yelling to someone about divorce papers. The old man sales guy was in his office sitting in his chair doing nothing. Another one was sitting on the couch next to me drinking coffee and laughing at the show on the television. I never saw the sales manager. I was there for almost an hour and they didn’t move for the WHOLE HOUR. What a job! I thought they could be researching or reading up on their vehicles or wiping off the dust or taking some for a spin to get better familiar with, but no. And they will be selling the Genesis? LOL

I thought this blog was about: "What is this discussion about? Fuel Efficiency (MPG) I keep receiving posts about everything, but increased fuel efficiency. My guess would be, that no body knows how to increase their MPG. Or they'd be tell others how to do it. So, I'll enlighten you. I drive a 2008 Ford Ranger as a courier, about 1,000 miles per week. Increased my MPG by about 23% over the EPA estimates of what this vehicle should be getting. Some of the increase is just by following the published free tips suggested by the "Dept. Of Transportation" The rest I can't tell you about, sorry blog rules. But if you'll use a little initiative and do some Google searching, you just might find the answers. Of course, you'll find 100's of schemes and scams first, but there are a couple that actually work, so happy hunting. Stan
Hope the Dealers are Better

I enjoy my current Azera, but getting the car in the first place was a total nightmare. The dealerships were horrendous. It took four dealerships and traveling to a different city in order to get my Azera. All I wanted was the advertised lease deal at the time. The first dealership negotiated the cap cost (about an hour) to a reasonable level, but then refused to give me the advertised money factor or residual. They told me that they didn't have to offer the advertised deal if they didn't want to and to leave if I don't like the deal ($500 a month lease vs. $299 advertised deal. I'm not making this up). I left. The second dealership was in a nearby city. I made an appointment, got the address out of the phone book and went. The address took me to an abandoned field. I called them and got the correct address and when I showed them the phone book and the wrong printed address, they had NO IDEA the address in the phone book was wrong. (They never looked at the advertisement or had it reviewed or had somebody else tell them about the error??) After some negotiation of cap cost and the lease deal, I asked them to run the numbers. I was left alone for over 30 minutes (no kidding). When the guy finally came back, he looked upset. He told me that nobody could get the lease software to work on the computer. He said the guy that usually does the leases was off that day. (I was VERY clear when I made the appointment that I was interested in a LEASE). I had no choice but to leave. I left my contact information and didn't get a call back for 3 days. When I finally did get a call, the manager told me that he could only take off about $700 off the retail price which resulted in a cap cost substantially more than I had negotiated initially when I was at the dealership. No good. The third dealership was totally dishonest. They claimed that ALL of the "invoice pricing" information from websites such as Edmunds and ALL of the pricing information given to me at the other Hyundai dealerships (which all matched) was wrong. The actual price of the Azera was over $800 more than what all the others claimed. ??? Right. Then they started tacking on fees. The funniest one was the "dealer name fee" of $350. They told me that was a mandatory fee for the privilege of putting the name "Ken Garff" on the building. ?? I laughed and walked out. Can you imagine this kind of nonsense going on with the HYUNDAI GENESIS? An upscale market luxury vehicle? What a total joke. "I" knew a LOT more about the Azera than the salespeople at the Hyundai dealerships. It was like walking into a store to buy expensive imported china only to find out it was a Wal-mart. So, it would be far better for Hyundai to have a separate dealership for the Genesis, in my opinion (and experience). Just to be fair. The fourth dealership I visited (Murdock Hyundai in Orem, Utah) was EXCELLENT. Very knowledgeable. I didn't have to negotiate at all. Implemented the lease deal AS ADVERTISED. No hidden fees. PERFECT. But one out of four is a very poor record and if the same pattern holds true for selling the Genesis, Hyundai is in BIG trouble. Somebody in the market for an upscale vehicle would not put up with that kind of amateurish incompetence.

Just got back from an all weather 1200 mile trip to Salt Lake City, UT. Wind, rain, snow, ice and heat. Our Murano went from a high of 28.6 mpg with a tail wind, and no a/c to a low of 16.4 with a headwind of 30-40 mph and the ac at at 74 degrees. Overall, with the curise control at 84 mph, 22.4 miles per gallon, with about half on a/c, all with wind was the end result. And yes, in Elko, Nevada, and in Orem, UT, 85 octane is the regular. Guess what, NO Problems. And up to 8,000 foot summits are on I-80, at full speed. ( ok 7900 feet actual ). Funny thing, across the Bonneville flats, you would expect great mpg. No dice. Too much wind. 17.1 mpg SLC, UT, to Wendover, NV, actual, no computer numbers, but in the mountains, 21.2, and no traffic. Odd, but less wind. Just to compare, Our BMW M3, 10.7 mpg, with no speed over 78 mph, Reno to SF, CA., no a/c, just traffic, and people that should never have been licensed to drive. And 11.7 mpg in my 1991 Peterbuilt, with 86,000 lbs over the same route, I-80, with little traffic. Our Murano Still RULES!
Wow, I can't believe what I'm reading.

My story is as follows: I drive a Ford Ranger 1998 4 cylinder with approx. 180,000 miles, pickup as a courier for an Environmental Analysis Lab. I drive about 850 miles per week. I increased my MPG from an average of 27 mpg to 29.8mpg. It works out that for every .07 cents I spend on the additive I save about .22 cents. That’s good economics. If you’d like more free info; you can contact me by email which is listed in my profile. The EPA mileage est. are 24 mpg to 28 mpg on the new ones with a 4 cylinder. What are your driving habits? Maybe the pre 1998 models did only get around 14 mpg. I'm puzzled. :confuse:

True, I've found that the type of gas one buys does not make a significant difference in MPG. I use Chevron with Techron. [not my choice, bosses idea.] However, I still got an increase of about 10%. See my earlier post for the complete story. Good luck with your efforts.
