Hating a car I would other wise love! Most horrible noise!
by deth on Tue Nov 18 04:56:26 PST 2008
I was in total lust with my car when I got it, until the break sqeak started!! 2008 HHR w/under 4000 miles on it. When I slow to stop, rather than "hard stop" my brakes squeak so bad that I cringe. It's embarassing and ear peircing. I've taken it in and was told it's the ceramic brake pad surface becoming slick because of how I slow to stop. Well I live in downtown Phoenix, AZ and drive mostly city streets. There's alot of slowing to stop. They suggested that when I'm in a parking lot, do a bunch of hard stopping to roughen up the pad. This hasn't worked. I'm so annoyed. I've called and emailed GM. This is supposed to be a "lifetime" brake pad according the the service guys. Frankly I'd rather pay money for new pads every few years to not be constantly embarrassed and sounding like my brakes need replacing.
Re: Ford Five Hundred/Mercury Montego: Problems & Solutions [zhuge]

Hi, Zhuge: I just purchased a used 2006 Ford 500 SEL with 11,000 miles on it, and have already experienced two of the three issues that you mentioned. I also hear a grinding sound as I back out of my driveway, when I apply the brake. After reading a few other replies, I'm agreeing with the cheap-o rear brake pad response, and, I looked at my back wheel and did see way more brake dust than the front, so, hopefully this will go away when I replace the pads with better, ceramic ones. . I haven't heard the "passenger side annoying vibration" yet but will pay attention when driving around the city and on the highway. The "lunging forward" problem was pretty scary. I stopped at a light, put full pressure on the brakes, and the engine accelerated like it was trying to override the brakes. I put the car in neutral and back into drive, and it idled normally after that. I'm not mechanically minded, but I can't help but wonder if it's a case of not letting the car warm up for a couple minutes after just starting it. I have a habit of starting the engine and off I go, but now I'm taking a few minutes to let the car warm up and let the idle speed adjust, and, so far, the problem has not repeated. Honestly, I thought my big feet were somehow pressing on the brake and touching the accelerator at the same time. Pretty scary stuff, especially after everyone I talked to suggested that if I'm going to buy a used car, to buy a Japanese one. Also, I need to get used to parking this beast in crowded parking spots. I'm used to smaller cars, and the 500 is a vehicle that can't be "whipped right into a tight parking space". To each his or her own, I suppose. Beyond the initial problems, this is truly a beautiful, spacious, great riding car. I'll hope for the best.

by boozoo99 on Thu Nov 13 19:37:04 PST 2008
Hi, through a very fortunate situation I have been given a free car to drive so I am looking at options of getting out of my lease and rid of my current car. If you could let me know what the realistic value of this car is that would be a big help as well! Atlanta, GA 07 Saturn Vue V6, 2WD 27k miles Roof Rack/CD player/leatherette-cloth combo Tires/Brakes- normal for 2 years of driving. More hwy driving than city. regular maintenance under warranty small scratch on material- inside of driver door Bumper needs to be replaced- I will replace unless you don't think I should (no accidents, hit and run in a parking lot) Thanks so much! Any suggestions for me are welcomed!
Love my new Smart, no regrets
by rdrygg on Tue Nov 11 19:08:59 PST 2008
I've always said that there should be one person cars as I am usually the only one in my car, and notice that many others are too on their way to and fro.So, I've been waiting for the Smart to get here. I didn't get the power steering and its just fine without it. I took it to the mountains for the weekend, it was a little sluggish uphill, but didn't bother me at all, I was able to drive the same way I always do on this route. It was a very comfortable ride. At first the no cruise control bothered me, then I found a comfortable angle for my foot to stay on the accelerator and it was fine. The weather was mild so I'm not sure I can vouch for it not getting blown around, but I didn't notice anything so far with that. There was plenty of cargo room for my friends and my stuff in the back. I live in the city and street park at home and work. My quality of life is so much better now that I don't have to wait for spots right in front of my home anymore (I can always count on someone to leave a big enough gap for me to get into, which used to aggravate me because it was usually someone taking up two spaces) I wanted the shortest possible car I could find. This is the perfect car for me.
