Re: STI - final thoughts [obyone]

That's why I commented that I would' ve asked for employee pricing on the accessories which depending on what part could be up to 40%. Just like you salesguys, always tearing apart and questioning the consumers sales stories. Just enjoy them and take them for what they're worth. Don't rain on "dinosaurs" parade. ;)

It used to be worse, when the support vehicles, etc tended to follow the same route - you would get a parade of 4x4's with trailers, as part of the problem. About ten years ago, they started to instruct them to go by a different route - with mobile phones etc it is always possible to call for assistance, and the old cars just run on the old roads, not the motorway, which goes a good stretch of the way from south London to north Sussex. The old cars run on the original Brighton road, through the towns along the way - they even pass through pedestrianised bits in some towns. And they go right past Gatwick airport - the old A23 road runs down the eastern boundary, directly under the flight path, and past the main entrance... I've only ever seen it in London, either in the suburbs or at Westminster Bridge. I did try the start once, but it was too crowded, whereas you get a pretty good view on the bridge - and its quite an iconic spot, right next to Parliament, with the chimes of Big Ben, etc...
Re: GM money woes [dvsutton]

Chrysler repaid its government backed loans early, back in the 80's Lee Iacocca had a plan and the vehicles ready to build. I don't believe Chrysler was already in debt to their eyeballs as GM is today. The way I understand this bailout, is we are buying these bundled loans. I would assume most have some sort of assets such as homes. Some are still making the payments. Some of the bundles are real shaky and we the tax payers will lose. That is the current condition of GM. You can call it a loan. It will be throwing good money after bad. We may have already bailed out the banks that loaned GM the $68 billion that will probably never be repaid. The only car that GM keeps parading as their future is the Volt. That is a joke. An eco wienie car that will not sell or make GM any money. It is a very feeble attempt to build the first generation of plug-in hybrids. They still do not have a battery provider. And the liabilities with the technology is not for a company on the brink of bankruptcy. If it was a good idea, Toyota would already be selling them.

Both Canada and Mexico have auto unions. Both are facing the same problems as the UAW but they aren't entirely toothless in either country either. It can be especially difficult to fire employees in Mexico without cause for example. BajaInsider. “In a 2004 World Bank study that ranked nations on how easy it was to hire and fire employees, Mexico was not only in last place [as the hardest], but on a scale of one to 100 (one being easiest nation in which you can hire and fire employees and 100 being hardest) it received a score of 72 while the second hardest nation to hire and fire employees (India) scored a 48.” Another Day in Paradise
