G'day I can add an odder story of my ancestors' American adventures. A lot of my forbears were miners from Cornwall and seem to have travelled easily between England, America and ultimately Australian and New Zealand, pursuing their fortune in hard rock mining through the Nineteenth Century. They appear to have left only minor makrs on history. However, my nine greats grandfather had a rather more direct impact on American history.. He was John Colyn Jope, (somitemes written as CHOP) a Cornish minister of religion and owner/skipper of the White Lion which he operated as a Privateer from 1618. On 15 July 1619, this and another vessel, the Treasurer, seized the cargo of the Portugese vessel, Bautista which included about 60 slaves. The White Lion, under Jope's command, was trading from the Dutch port of Vlissingen and quickly traded their portion of the cargo, including more than 20 slaves, to the settlers at Jamestown, Virginia. The legal niceties are gloriously confused but well documented in the records of subsequent court action against the Treasurer and in the surviving records of the Virginian Company. The Melungeans claim their ancestry to descend, in part, from this group of involuntary immigrants. Whilst Jope's actions are not something to be proud of, it raises interesting questions as to how an infant colony was modified by his opportunist action. Now we could not get further off topic than that, could we? Cheers Graham

Gee Bob!! Sure wish I had known you were in the area....I would have driven over there and bought you one of Joe's Pasty's. (for others...it's a cornish food dish..pronounced Past...EEE). His pasty's were written up in Money magazine a few years ago. Be sure to let me know if you come this way again. My brothers wife was a Goodwin and I think she was related to the Steven's family. Think I heard my mom mention the name years ago. Thanks for the Link!!! I'll have to check it out. Crystal Falls is a picture postcard town. It's so small the city limit signs are all on the same post. Ironwood has them on two I think. Jim

I resemble that last remark. Give me some saffron buns or evva cake, a decent pasty and finish it all off with Jelbert's ice cream (made with real Cornish clotted cream). While you're there, get some fresh fish that was brought ashore that morning. Apart from that, you have to learn the joys of Indian cooking. :P

I strongly recommend pinning a cornish game hen to your lapel. Not only will you stand out in the crowd, but after a few hours, others will be able to track you down by scent alone. Which vehicles do you absolutely, positively want to see at the shows? Last year, my #1 goal was to see the Saab 9-2X. It was there, but sadly the representative was poorly trained and unable to answer any questions about the features. kirstie_h Roving Host & Future Vehicles Host

Not me. I like to find the places that look like a "dive" but serve great, home-made tasting foods. I found a Caribbean place that serves stuffed Roti that's better than the Cornish (sp?) Game Hen at the restaurant where I met George Stephanopolous. Price is about 1/10th, too. -juice
