Re: 1996 Sportage 4x4 transmission issue [mattman88]

I have a 2001 Kia Sportage 4x4 automatic and I had a issue where at low speeds or braking the car would lurch or feel like I went over a bump. It ended up being the front hubs. It would lock the hub then un-lock and cause the issue even though the car was not in 4 wheel drive. I took the spring and slider gear out of both hubs and the problem went away. I don't have 4x4 now but in the summer/fall I don't need it. I'm going to get manual hubs so this won't happen again.

I've got a Kia Sportage 4wd when in 2wd sometimes from a dead stop when I accelerate there is a whining sound followed by a thump and it feels like you've gone over a pot hole with both front wheels. It doesn't happen all the time. What would cause this?

Hey, After looking at westins website, I found that there is a one eight inch minimum clearance on the front body pocket mounts for the steps bracket, sure enough the installer did not follow this in the instructions for installing the tubes, I crawled under the truck the other day and loosend the steps and adjusted to specs, Then torqued to 74 foot pounds, and Voila no more creeks or noise.........Why did i pay someone to install these..........Damn

I checked the westin website they reccomend 74 foot lbs torque for the tubes not sure if the installer did this, seems to me they just used a impact wrench, never did see them torque anything, BTW my wife needs those steps too.......

darkston, I have an '07 Classic Ext Cab W/T. I installed a pair of Westin tubes and noticed a vibration at 35MPH. I took it to the Chevy dealer and they said it was the tubes causing it. I have to keep the step tubes so the wife can get in the thing. BTW.....no creaking noise.

Were rubber or foam gasgets around the screws that fastened the steps to the body installed? I've found that many loose bolts and cracked mounts cause alot of squeeks in my truck and its "new". I'd take it to the dealership since its still under warranty and if they say "we didn't install it" well, everything they try to sell as aftermarket items get refered to other companies for that stuff anyways. QUALITY is not one of GM's strong points I've found. Good Luck! :(
