Here's an interesting article on one of the possible scenarios that GM might find itself in. We Are All Flint Michigan Now Any comments? I thought that it was an interesting set of speculations, although by no means the ONLY set of speculations that make sense at this point in time.

Maybe Japan should advance 50 Billion to level the playing field..After all they invaded this country using ex-congressional folks who turned to the field of lobbying to fill their pockets with yen....Tradefree industrial zones were established to allow the invasion..I spent two years running the sales of a Japanese plant in the Battle Creek, Mich area..early-80s, it was a giveaway program and some of the product was "junk". Slice the union pay and get the right to run the plant..Let management's pay stand for the automotive end is a tough game..for somebody has to make decisions..The union is liberal, their game is looking for the the bad side, confusion and complaining is their goal..Spent 6 yrs running a manufacturing plant near Flint and yes, we had the UAW. We had the right to run the plant, the Big3 gave away that right..I have seen paycheck stubs on janitors making !00k/yr. in the late 90s.. The Big3 have been burning money for years, and the Govt has finally screwed GM, Ford, and Chrysler with it's ecology stance and lack of domestic oil..The whole scenerio has been in play for years.. The whack jobs pushing the "Global Climate" mantra will stiffle the country for they have a good start, and no quick fix is available..Just BS by the volumes..Take a look at the mortgage mess and the history of Freddie and Fannie, DEMOCRATS IN ACTION..Can't wait until they get their hands on HEALTH CARE.. NO HEALTH CARE IS COMING..

No, I'm actually not surprised. Though I am glad you pushed me to try it out - that what real friends ought to do. Ask questions that help you come to a well-informed purchase decision. For $1800, the screen is not that bright, the interface is only so-so, and it doesn't even come with a backup cam, like the Tribeca's. That would help you back up to mount a trailer hitch, for instance. I'm not sure if the region was set on the one I test drove, but it seemed clunky and could not find the two Exxon stations on Rockbille Pike near White Flint Mall, which have been there for ages. Garmins are far from perfect (still no Bridgeville McDonalds, after how many decades?), but the interface is 10 times easier to use, and the screen is actually brighter. Sound is not as good, and the screen sizes are still smaller, but you pay only a fraction of the price, and you let your wife or kids borrow it. Be careful about that, though! Wifey stole my first Garmin. :D Today, I would probably buy a Nuvi 700 series. Not sure which one, but I like the idea of traffic capability, plus the improved satellite receivers, and the ability to add Custom POIs (points-of-interest). With a 2009 WRX, you'll need the speed-trap POI database. ;)
RAV4 Sport V6 4x4 (model 4443) Price Paid

Waiting until October was the right thing to do as rebate increased to $1000 in Central Atlantic region. Made the purchase last night from an area dealer (Hazleton, PA) even though I started my negotiations w/ Fitzgerald Motors in Maryland. Fitzgerald did not have desired exterior color (Flint Mica) in stock. Their price would not have been as good as their posted in-stock internet prices if they would have dealer traded for my specific vehicle of choice. That being said, I used Fitzgerald's prices as leverage during my negotiations w/ local dealers. None of them would match Fitzgerald's price. My final deal came within $83 of Fitzgerald's posted internet price. Here are the details of my transaction: MSRP:$29644 Invoice: $27082 Paid: $25500 (including $1000 rebate & excluding TTL) Total discount: $4144 (13.98%) Amount below invoice: $582 RAV4 Sport V6 4x4 (model 4443) equipped with the following options: (EJ) JBL PREMIUM AM/FM STEREO (CD-A ) TONNEAU COVER (RL) DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS (SR) PWR MOONROOF (TO) TOW PREP PKG (CF-R) 5-PIECE CARPET FLOOR & CARGO MATS (PPO) (MF) MUDGUARDS (PPO) (WL) WHEEL LOCKS Had 1 other local dealer w/ an offer $80 above what I paid and two other offers $200-$400 above what I paid. Thanks to fellow posters who helped out with the info during the purchase process. Better informed & educated car buying consumer as a result of this discussion board. Picking up vehicle tomorrow night. I'm sure they'll sit me down and try to ram an extended warranty down my throat before handing over the keys.

General Motors Corp., still unable to meet demand for fuel-efficient small cars, will keep its sole U.S. compact-car factory running on overtime for the remainder of this year, the auto maker said Friday. GM is running short on Chevrolet Cobalt cars despite adding a third shift this summer at its Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant. GM spokesman Chris Lee said the company hopes the weekend work at Lordstown will deliver sufficient supply by next year. The factory will run two shifts every Saturday for the rest of the year, except for the Thanksgiving and Veterans Day holiday weekends, he said. Cobalt sales fell 17% last month from a year earlier, a drop GM attributed to short supply. Still, Cobalt sales for the year are up 6%, while GM's sales overall have fallen 18% in a weak U.S. auto market. Sales of the compact Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic models also fell last month. Dealers across the U.S. have fewer than eight weeks' worth of the Cobalt, Corolla and Civic in stock, according to Wardsauto.com. The industry norm is to have at least a 10-week supply. The Ford Focus, with roughly a 13-week supply according to Wards, saw a 5% bump in sales last month. GM has no plans to build car-assembly plants or convert truck factories and instead will manage increasing demand for cars by adding shifts at existing locations. GM is building a small-engine plant in Flint, Mich., scheduled to open in 2010. An engine shortage at GM's Tonawanda, N.Y., plant forced the auto maker to cancel overtime shifts at the Lordstown factory last month, according to United Auto Workers officials.
