Hybrid vehicles on delivery routes
by docvox on Fri Aug 15 14:44:15 PDT 2008
I'm employed by the post office as a rural mail carrier in NH, and my daily drive consists of a 30 mi. interstate highway commute, a 30 mi. mail route with approximately 500 stops and some instances with speeds above 30mph, then the reverse 30 mi. homeward commute. I currently drive a late model Ford Taurus wagon and get about 9mpg on the route and about 15mpg overall. This gets expensive! I've been thinking about the practicality of a hybrid vehicle, particularly the Escape or the Prius. I've test driven the Escape (and liked it) and have spoken to Prius-owning friends. (The Escape has an advantage because of the greater interior volume). Both vehicle present some problems in conversion to right-hand operation for the route. I have had concerns as to whether a hybrid would hold up to this fairly severe duty cycle or likely be running on engine for much of the route. The discussion now about plug-in hybrids has me interested again. Does anyone know of hybrids, regular or plug-in, having been used in circumstances similar to mine? I see A123 has an operation in Watertown, MA., not far from me. Does anyone know how I can contact someone in their tech department to query them?

Hi Brian As owner of an 07 Azera Limited, I make reference to your comment: "I have one gripe and that is the quality of the ride. It seems to transmit every ripple in the road and positively crashes over lrge bumps and potholes." I agree 100%. I have also read the threads concerning different kind of shocks, etc. I have determined that I have the correct shocks but that doesn't solve the problem. It is an excellent ride over roads without bumps or joints in the surface. Guess I will just live with it. On an extended trip on the freeway I have seen as high as 32.5 MPG (Wife was driving in an extended construction zone at 55 mph). Overall average at 60 mph was 30.8 for the trip consisting of 1420 miles. (I would support a 55 mph speed limit to conserve fuel nationally and save lives, however I also am retired and in no hurry to get anyplace). I saw one other Azera on my trip that included 5 days on the road between Tampa, Watertown NY, Watertown back to Tamps. Amazing. We waved at each other.

Would you mind sharing the dealers name? I'm currently dealing with Herb Chambers , whom seems to be discounting around 11% to 12% off MSRP. I've also been corresponding with Lexus of Watertown but they won't counteroffer even after I've made an offer. Any experiences with dealing would be helpful.
tick-tock, waiting until wednesday

climatecontrol, all things considered I would probably opt for the Acura cl type-s, especially if it comes with a 6-speed. The l.s v-8 is an interesting car. It must be comfortable inside. I will say that it has never tested all to well on reviews but I cannot say from experience. If I were in your friend's position I would look into a Passat v-6 with a 5 speed. Depending on 4-motion and options you can cut some corners and still have a great car for under $25K that is brand new! Heck the Jetta GLI with 6-speed rips as well! As far as the leatherette issue. I am waiting to pick up my electric red 330i with sport package, moon roof, xenon's and heated seats. When it came down to it, I was on a budget and I know the leather is of better quality, but the amazing sport seats were what I wanted. 'ette will be fine and I know personally I will not miss the added cost. The 330i was on the lot packaged this way and the dealer was aggressive in wanting to move it. I could not have been luckier! As far as the HK, I am with the fella up top. I am not a huge stereo guy and I am sure either of the systems will be fine for me. One last note. I do not work for a dealership or know anyone who does. Driving a BMW especially finding a way to get a 330i rather than the 325i (not to say the 325i isn't great b/c it is!) has always been a dream of mine. Because of that I did an extensive amount of research in the pricing area! I live in Connecticut and we have 8 dealerships in this little state. There is a lot of money here, I only wish I had a little more. At different times I contacted every dealership in the state, even using many of the buying strategies from this web-site. I am not going to disparage any other dealership but I must say that County-Line BMW of Watertown is far and away the superior dealer in Connecticut. They were courteous, real and understood both my dreams and budget restrictions. They even sold me a set of once used snow tires and will have them mounted when I pick the car up on Wednesday for more than a reasonable price. Truly first class, and I cannot recommend them enough!

As I stated on my posting, the wire that was loose engaged the trans and cruise light together, causing a chugging or stall. The repair was done at Fucillo import auto mall in Watertown NY. This was done on available time by the tech. between jobs. I was very fortunate to have a curious technician take the time to dig into this job. Good luck in finding the source of your problem. I hope this helps. Marc!
