2001 1.8T Passat - need diagram for turbo installation
by tucsonmike on Mon Nov 10 15:00:24 PST 2008
Hi. Does anyone know where I can see a blow-up diagram of the area surrounding the turbo on a 2001 Passat 1.8T engine? Preferably online somewhere? I'm trying to find all of the gaskets and crush washers and o-rings, all of these little parts that I'll need, when I replace the turbo charger on my 2001 1.8T Passat. (Engine code is AUG). It's a fairly new rebuilt longblock engine, and when installed it was with a cheapo turbo which has blown its bearing. So I purchased a new KKK (really Borg-Warner now) turbocharger. The B-W (B-W part is 5303 988 0029, which correlates to VW part number 058 145 703J). I've got the exhaust gasket and the intake gasket, but it looks like there are various crush washers and seals needed (e.g. for the oil send and return lines). Can anyone out there point me to a blow-up diagram, or even just a recommended parts list, for all of these little goodies that I'll need? Mike

Darn you Canadians with your sense of fair play. Here in the states it's easier to get out of a deal with the devil to sell your soul than to get out of a lease. Loved that story...I mean it wasn't nice but it is incredible. I love the U.S.A. but some things are better in Canada; *We do have medicare. Not working as well as it should, it is expensive, but basically you can go to a doctor or hospital without paying for your visit (do pay thru taxes). *Our stock markets got hit but mainly do to the recession coming. We didn't have any subprime stuff going on. You needed at least 10% downpayment. *I worked for a U.S. company - a division of Warner Brothers. Over the years they ; -let a guy go and they weren't paying his unemployment insurance. He went to the government and they made them pay. -One lady sales rep became pregnant. They wanted to sideline her and not pay her. She complained to the government and they had to pay her salary for I believe 3 months -I was a sales rep and let go after 16 years because they lost a line they distributed. They thought they would just wave goodbye. Little did they know they had to pay a minimum of 1 week for every year. Government made them pay up. They paid the minimum which almost no company would do - most would pay about half a years salary after 16 yrs.. Most give you extra and a coach or classes for getting a new job. (don't worry though...no one would hire me at 46 years old so started my owncompany and make much more than they paid) *Another lack of fairness comes to mind, this ability to sue about everything, including a million dollars for spilling coffee on yourself - these cases almost never make it to court in Canada. I think those were very insightful words - Canada is fairer, Greenpea. But, don't get me wrong. I love you guys (well, I mean Americans in general) because we wouldn't have our standard of living in Canada without you, and the world, would not be as nice a place. You have a great formula for making prosperity for the masses, unfortunately the lack of regulation sometimes backfires. It would be great if you all had the drive, innovation, freedom, but could just come down a notch and try to be a little fairer.
Reminder: what to do when Oil Light illuminates solid
by elias on Sun Oct 12 05:10:18 PDT 2008
Pal who I sold my 05 Passat TDI just had oil-chain/oil-shaft shred in stop & go highway driving. a SOLID OIL PRESSURE LIGHT (hello) was his first indication, but he didn't believe it, thought it was probably a sensor failure, so he drove it for 2 miles, then restarted it twice. :| If this was a warner-bros cartoon and he and I were both mice, I would slap him silly like those two cartoon mice. But no - the results to his ex-TDI are punishment enough. So a warning to B5 (04,05) Passat drivers about this double-secret non-maintenance-item - OIL PUMP CHAIN - The 04,05 Passat TDI requires oil pump chain/shaft inspection and maybe replacement every 75k or it is likely to shred. This is not mentioned in the manual for the car, as far as I know. TDIs are especially great cars in my experience, but here is an example of the special care and feeding a TDI requires, especially the uber-rare 04,05 Passat TDI.

"...Toyota 6 speed tranny ..." Isn't the 6-speed in the 500/Mtgo an Aisin brand? (Not to be confused with the 6-speed in the current Taurus which is a Ford/GM joint brand.) I know Toyota is a 30% shareholder in Aisin, but Aisin transmissions go into many worldwide cars/trucks and that company is run independently of Toyota. Aisin started by stealing a bunch of tech from Borg-Warner years ago, not Toyota. Transmission used in the 500/Montego -- click here

Well you'd have to mate the XJ6 engine to the Jaguar's various transmissions, and the early ones really sucked (Borg Warner). I guess you might find an older Jag manual transmission, but you wouldn't be very happy with that, either. You have to remember that this engine won LeMans. A Chrysler 440 never did. The XJ6 engine is race-bred, which may account for its stubborn refusal to function in a sedan. The XJ6 engine's main attributes are smoothness and durability under high revs. What this means is that putting a Chevy V8 in an XJ6 makes no sense because you lose that "silky" vibration-free smoothness, (the car's most endearing characteristic) and putting an XJ 6 engine in an American car makes no sense because it's not a high torque, low rev engine that American cars need. But you are correct, the XJ6 engine is as much a porker as the 440. You don't save any weight one way or the other. The XJ6 engine belongs in a big 2-seat sports car, period.

First if you believe what Bill Clinton says in a speech you are not interested in the truth. Balancing the Budget is in NO WAY paying down the National Debt. The Debt Was about $4 trillion when Clinton came into office and $5.7 Trillion when he left. I know he can spin it so a UAW worker believes he did a good job. Nothing I say will make you or Rocky believe otherwise. You need to study the National Debt a little more to understand that we are borrowing today for our children to pay. And Bill Clinton added his share. http://www.cedarcomm.com/~stevelm1/usdebt.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S._presidential_terms All figures are from the U.S. Treasury Department Website. Clinton's last day as President National DEBT on Jan 19, 2001............ $5,727,776,738,304.64 $Tril Clinton's 1st day as President National DEBT on Jan 20, 1993............ $4,188,092,107,183.60 $Tril DEBT: Down/(Up) under Clinton.........
