Re: Minimal Issues [caribou1]

Caribou1: Your advice about going down hill in "N" was a Godsend!!!!!! Our daughter came up our hill, when no one else has! She did not know no one has made it up say nothing about making it down. But.... she attempted to, thinking she could just drive down. I went back and looked at your advice. Almost as slow as a snail. She hugged the side of the hill that has a rough dirt and rock covered with ice. She kept it in neutral and made it. Your advice was a life saver! Thank you so very, very much!!!!!! Farout

Your mileage should continue to improve. I have a friend who has a 250 just like mind except color who was only getting about 11mpg at first. He said at about 50 thousand his made a drastic improvement in mileage. At 32000 my latest trip gave me 19.2 on one stretch of interstate driving. This was pure interstate with cruse set on 65. For the whole trip I averaged 17.8mpg. This was blue ridge parkway starting at virginia state line to Ronoke and then interstate back home to Rock Hill SC, Truck continues to give me flawless service.
Re: 2008 Civic MT clutch problem [glogo]
by edgardoe on Thu Oct 09 19:38:08 PDT 2008
While I'm sure it is possible to burn out a clutch on a hill, you would most definitely know that you were burning it up at the time...I mean, you would have to really really try to destroy it...especially on a 9 month old car!! When you come to a stop on a hill, do you hold yourself in position by "feathering" the clutch with the car in gear, or do you put it in neutral and use the brakes to keep it in position? I see a lot of people rocking fore and aft at stops by constantly partially engaging and disengaging the clutch...which is a terrible thing to do to a clutch. Given your extensive experience with MT vehicles, however, I assume you don't do that. Perhaps some others here have had clutch issues with their Civics as well. I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota with a V8, 5 speed and 201,000 miles that I beat the ever-living hell out of on a regular basis since the day I bought it new...and the transmission has never let me down. I bought a 2008 Civic LX MT in July and haven't had any problems out of it yet either (just turned 6,000 miles on the odometer).
Re: cruise control and fuel efficiency [jmosby1469]
by jlflemmons on Wed Oct 08 06:55:56 PDT 2008
You are correct. Cruise control is not effective for fuel economy in rolling terrain as it cannot "look ahead" and compensate. Nor can it "average" such as letting the car gain a few MPH leading up to a hill, or drop a few extra MPH while approaching the crown of a hill.

I hate that you are having problems with your 350. My 250 continues to give me great service. I took it to the dealer saturday for its 30000 mile service and then the wife and I headed up the blue ridge parkway toward mt mitchell to see the fall colors. 290 mile trip averaged 15.5 mpg. Back in august we took the camper down to the outer banks. If I held it down between 60 and 65 I got about 10 mpg. However on one stretch lets say I was in a hurry to get the beach. Averaging about 80 to 85 mph mileage dropped to about 7mpg. Camper weighs about 9000 lbs empty is 35 feet long and 11 1/2 feet high. I easley had another 2000 lbs in cargo and passengers. At 85 mph truck had power to spare. Needless to say I'm still very happy with mine. I still average around 14 mpg in my day to day driving. I hope you can get the problems with your truck resolved. You might try to have the dealer re flash the main computer. It controls the fuel and air ratios and that has a lot to do with power and mileage. Good Luck
50 MPG Possible after battery depletion?
by coldcranker on Sat Sep 27 07:06:22 PDT 2008
tpe said: "....the mpg of the Volt will be once the ICE generator has kicked in. GM is stating this will be around 50 mpg." Since the ICE/generator/motor path is around 80% efficient, I don't see how this 50 MPG is achievable in a 3300 lb Volt at battery depletion. (Normal transmissions are around 95% efficient or higher.) The 50 MPG might be possible if the ICE: 1. ICE shuts off below 20 mph (with time hysteretic logic added). 2. Battery helps feed the motor during acceleration or up hills. 3. ICE delivers some small amount of charge to the batteries, along with regenerative braking. Without all the above, you might be able to get 30 MPG or so, not anywhere near 50 MPG as GM has so far stated. This would seem to contradict some of the latest statements saying that the ICE doesn't recharge the batteries, although that probably only means the ICE won't bring the batteries to a full charge, providing sustaining charge only to keep the batteries at 30%.
