So, when B.O. solves the Health Care problems in the US, why would you even need the UAW? What else does the UAW do? (and who else could do it?) Negotiates contracts. Otherwise it's the company saying take it or leave it on pay, and they'll keep churning the workers to save another nickle. Having a stable workforce benefits the employer since it's expensive to train new workers, and the union can provide a stable workforce to choose from. (Pay your workers well, and let them vote with their feet). Negotiate working conditions. The union will step in when an employer tells the line workers that they can only have two bathroom breaks a day. (OSHA could do that). Protects workers rights. Think Troopergate. :) Seems like the unions have been good forcing companies to hire women and minorities too and protecting against agism firings. (Rely on OSHA. Workers Comp, Department of Labor or some other state or federal agency). Training and apprentice programs. If the unions didn't train journeymen electricians who would? (Community colleges would be an answer - too bad Boise doesn't have any yet). Fosters communication among the workforce. (Make the employees part of the company somehow - ownership, stock options - and they'll pay attention to what's going on and what's needed).

Keyless, power windows, locks, mirrors and 15" alloys...not that plain looking. It will meet her needs perfectly for a 1st car and the fact that it has a great warranty and roadside included plus free oil changes all add value in my opinion. Wish we made more to let her get any car she wanted, but life doesn't work that way. We'll spring for the insurance and fill ups when necessary but I think the wife left a cushion from her college account to cover this stuff. The older girl told me that she'd consider used cars also as she definitely didn't want the Accent. My time frame with her is until the 1st week of January so we still have time. The Sandman :)

I'm pretty upset about the demise of Flight 26 on XM as well. I listened to that the most. It seems that the ones I liked best are changed. One thing that really drives me nuts is how things are categorized now. On XM, the decades channels are now listed with pop so that when I use the "Category" knob in my 06 Accord, I can't get to the pop stations in the 20's because it goes to channel 4. Those used to be a separate category (called "Decades" IIRC). Now several categories are split into different sections rather than a span of numbers in a row so the category knob is pretty useless. It was much easier when the sports channels were in a row and the news channels were in a row. I'm going to have to remember things that aren't in my presets now (I only have 12)... and this brain can't remember all that. I also think it sucks that XM didn't get NFL and NASCAR without paying extra. I'm assuming that Sirius folks didn't get Baseball, Indy Car, college sports, etc.

I love technology ... was headed home from teaching the college class last night just after 8 PM. It's about a 20 min drive home, and I was starving .. mentally cataloguing what was at home to eat and coming up pretty short. I decided I really wanted fried rice from a little place close to home, and was thinking that I wished I had the phone number. AHA ! ... get out the iPhone and browse online for the phone number, call and order the rice, and it's ready by the time I drive there .... How did I ever survive without all this? LOL
Hatchbacks

I've owned two over the years. The first was an '85 Accord LX, bought used when I graduated college. A buddy of mine and I drove it from California to Michigan with two sets of golf clubs and luggage. On the way to Michigan, we had both rear seats folded down; on the return trip, we rearranged everything so the passenger rear seat was upright and allowed the front passenger seat to recline fully. The Accord got traded in on an '88 Isuzu Trooper (hmm, guess I was ahead of the curve with that transaction - though the Trooper was ultimately sold and a Mazda Protege replaced it). The second was an '03 Focus ZX5, bought new. Was originally intended as the car for my daughter when she turned 16, but she never was comfortable driving a stick so I ended up driving it. Was pretty practical, but never liked the fact that for the rear seats to fold flat, the rear seat cushions had to be folded forward, which restricted how far back the front seats would go. Was able to fit a couple of dining room chairs into it with myself and another passenger, however. I'm thinking that my next car would be a hatch (I currently drive a Saturn L300 sedan). I've driven the Fit (1st generation), xD and the Vibe (2.4). I kinda miss the 'entry level' luxury hatches that were offered in years past ... Saab (900, 9000, 9-3 and 9-5), the Merkur Scorpio and XR4ti (remember those?), even the lamented 318ti and MB C230 3-door hatchbacks. Perhaps we may see a rejuvenation of hatches or small wagons going forward, from all sorts of manufacturers.
